Globe Telecom has officially expressed its support to the bills introduced by Philippine senator Sherwin Gatchalian that aim to institute reforms to the Philippine telecommunications industry, including those that refer to the adoption of nationwide mobile number portability and streamlining of permitting process for cell sites to improve telecommuting efficiency.

Hopefully, these proposed measures would help the local telecoms industry roll out its services in the country, improved internet speed and service that could benefit millions of users and lower the cost for the consumers.

These measures are favorable for the premiere purveyor of the Filipino digital lifestyle as it needs to expand its infrastructure in relation to the deployment of the previously warehoused 700 MHz spectrum, which is seen not only to deliver additional capacity but also enhanced indoor coverage. However, permitting problems seem to be a hindrance for Globe to build roughly a thousand towers compared to just 450 cell sites a year which include concerns from homeowners associations and longer process of applications for the said installation.

Whether the measures proposed by the Philippine Senate can be realized or not, it is clear that the Philippine government must do more beyond its continuing efforts and developments to help the information and communications sector in contributing to the nation's growing economy.
