Anyone who has been visiting Subic in Zambales may be awed and impressed by its natural beauty and wonders, but these are not the only ones that the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) should be proud of as it was hailed as the Best Sports Tourism Destination of the Year in the 3rd Sports Industries Awards and Conference Asia (SPIA Asia) held last November 7, 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Heralded by its "Fantastic Subic Bay" campaign, SBMA copped gold in the said category beating the likes of Victoria, Australia and Thailand which won silver and bronze respectively. Aside from being the Best Sports Tourism Destination for 2017, SBMA also brought home the Silver award in the Best Sponsorship for a Sport, Team or Event (US$250,000) category.

It is highly regarded that Subic is known for staging international triathlon competitions such as K-Swiss ITU, 5150 and Ironman which makes pretty sense why it is dubbed as the Triathlon Capital of the Philippines. By June 2018, Subic will once again be in the limelight of the global triathlon scene as it is set to hold a full Ironman competition which is tapped as the ultimate endurance test for Ironman competitors around the world.

SBMA General Manager Jem Camba stated that the new achievement would not have been possible without the effortless support of local stakeholders in every sporting event the venue holds. He also thanked the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region III and Philippine Tourism Director Ronnie Tiotuico for their huge contributions in making Subic what it is today. With that in mind, I recommend you to visit Subic and see for yourself why it is one of the best tourism destinations in the Philippines and what makes it good for active sports buffs.
