MMFF 2018 Break New Records With Fantastica On Top

ENTERTAINMENT | January 9, 2019

Millions of Filipino movie buffs and their loved ones have spent part of their Christmas and New Year going to the cinemas and watching their favorite choice of Filipino movies that are the official entries of the 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival and it is a strong testament to the success of this year's film fest as its undisclosed figures have broken what the affair has grossed on these two special occasions last year. This was officially announced by MMFF spokesman Noel Ferrer but its records tell more of the story if you read the news.

According to the official statement from the MMFF, Star Cinema's Fantastica starring Vice Ganda, Richard Gutierrez and Dingdong Dantes and Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles starring Vic Sotto, Coco Martin and Maine Mendoza are on top of the official rankings since day one with Viva Films' Aurora on a distant but satisfying third place. In an unofficial tally that was publicly released on the 2nd of January, the literal neck-and-neck battle between Fantastica and Jack Em Popoy began to become overturned with the former grossing Php457 million and the ladder earning more than Php380 million in local cinemas in 9 days.

A day after the release of the unofficial tally, Viva Films announced on social media that the horror film Aurora has breached the Php100 million box-office mark which was a surprisingly wonderful milestone for the Filipino horror and thriller flicks. Its main star Anne Curtis-Smith was quick in thanking the moviegoers and her fans for watching the movie with a positive smile on their faces, indeed. On the other hand, The Girl In The Orange Dress has also gained an upstanding traction despite being fourth in the rankings and far from the top three based on the unofficial tally while Mary, Marry Me is one that is not to be left out due to the overwhelming reception and commentary.

With that much said without the need to take a look at the disappointing figures of the other entries, it is satisfying enough to say that the 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival is one written in its history books considering that it has recently fulfilled its goal of achieving a total box office gross of at least Php1 billion for all eight entries. We always keep in mind that the MMFF is the most exciting way for Filipinos to support their own and this year is undoubtedly no exception so we can't wait for the next MMFF on Christmas 2019.
