On The Radar: Braving The Storm

ON THE RADAR, ENTERTAINMENT | July 31, 2017

Two Filipino films, one television coverage and a highly popular Japanese anime were able to brave the storm to the delight and satisfaction of local pop culture buffs at home and on-the-go while looking at disappointments from Filipino netizens on social media mostly regarding late class suspensions due to series of heavy rains.

Here's what you need to know about the shows and films that begin to gain following anew amidst unforseen and natural circumstances.

'Kita Kita' Is Indie's New Sleeper Hit

The experimental tandem of Empoy Marquez and Alessandra de Rossi has surprisingly making an impact in the Philippine box office after their movie 'Kita Kita' becomes a sleeper hit in local cinemas.

According to Spring Films, the romantic flick set in Japan has reached the Php100 million mark in local box-office sales in just one week then crossed the Php200 million mark over the recent weekend. The unexpected mark would eventually follow the success of other sleeper hits from the independent scene such as That Thing Called Tadhana and Die Beautiful. The movie has also received an overwhelmingly positive reception from movie critics and was even praised by several local celebrities who have watched the movie.

The unprecedented and overwhelming success of the movie mainly due to strong "word of mouth" marketing is literally becoming a testament that Filipino-made indie films should not be underestimated and local movie buffs should expect what holds next for the surprisingly rising AlEmpoy love team in the coming chances. Anyway, 'Kita Kita' is still showing in cinemas nationwide so you should thank Viva Films for bringing this unexpected blockbuster to the masses.

More Filipinos Watch SONA 2017 on ABS-CBN

It is without question that more Filipinos nationwide and around the world would prefer and trust ABS-CBN when it comes to the freshest news updates and covering special events happening in the country, and its coverage of Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte's second State of the Nation Address (SONA) is indeed no exception.

More Filipino households watch ABS-CBN News' comprehensive coverage of SONA 2017 which was eventually the most watched among major Philippine TV networks last July 24, 2017. Based on data from Kantar Media, "Pangako ng Pagbabago: The ABS-CBN 2017 SONA Special Coverage" scored a high national TV rating of 16.6% which is almost nine points higher than that of its rival network's special coverage.

But, that's not all. During the two-hour SONA, President Duterte praised Failon Ngayon's documentary special "Pamana ng Mina" which took viewers to not only the recent state of the local mining industry but also the effects of mining to the livelihood of many Filipinos as well. This just proves that ABS-CBN News will continue to deliver highly-engaging documentaries and unbiased comprehensive news reporting as abided by its mission "In The Service of the Filipino Worldwide" amidst heavy criticism, profanity and fake news.
