Fantastica
and Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles are neck in neck for the top spot in the
2018 Metro Manila Film Festival box office rankings with Viva Films' Aurora
makes a good standing but far from what the two top films have grossed. And
while the battle for the top grosser spot continues, the MMFF has taken its
time to honor those who have shown exemplary performance and prowess through
its awards night and its big winner is none other than Heaven's Best
Entertainment's Rainbow Sunset winning 11 awards including Best Picture, Best
Director for acclaimed veteran filmmaker Joel Lamangan and almost all the major acting honors.
This
year's edition of one of the most active film festivals in the Philippines
features a mixed bag of mainstream and independent films that were carefully chosen
by its Executive Committee. But when it comes to the prestigious Gabi Ng Parangal,
their decision of handing out honors is becoming more difficult than the usual
mainly due to the film's intriguing lineup. However, there are times that among
the chosen films to be shown in local cinemas comes a game changer that
represents resilience and a strong stand amidst tough competition and
preference, and I think Rainbow Sunset is what I meant.
Waking
up to one of the most interesting stories I've learned on television and online
the morning after the Awards Night, I was curious about why this romantic drama
flick involving a unique love triangle that stands the test of time is
considered a big winner but surprisingly posed a strong stand about movie theaters
focusing more on quality rather than quantity. Besides, most of the millennial
generation are not delectably savvy about the movie's plot and twist that revolves
around a triangle that is tearing one's family apart.
On the
other hand, if there is by any chance that the movie is showing in a cinema
near you, you would have to be impressed and awed by the prowess and
performance of its three main stars - Eddie Garcia, Tony Mabesa and Gloria Romero
(Best Actress) - and how love remains fruitful and strong beyond time and boundaries.
Furthermore, Rainbow Sunset is an interesting family drama that is worthy of
nods and praises from LGBTQIA+ communities in the Philippines. It makes sense
to me and anyone who is reading it right now why many movie buffs, young and
old alike, should feel ashamed why they should not have tried watching it and I
don't blame them.
