Netflix has officially announced that the anime adaptations of Square Enix's fan favorite series Tomb Raider and Kong: Skull Island, a franchised player in Legendary Entertainment's Monsterverse franchise, are in the works and slated to become available soon. Produced and developed in partnership with Legendary, the two upcoming anime series are set to expand the universes of both the popular video game franchise and the film aside from the anime adaptation of Pacific Rim which is set to be released on the streaming service on March 4, 2021.

According to the global streaming service, the Skull Island anime adaptation will feature a new chapter in the Monsterverse franchise and is set to follow a group of survivors who find themselves stranded in the most dangerous place on Earth - a mysterious island inhabited by prehistoric creatures including Kong, the Eighth Wonder Of The World. Legendary's Monsterverse started in 2014 with Godzilla, followed by 2017's Kong: Skull Island and 2019's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. Godzilla vs. Kong, the next chapter of the franchise, will feature the forthcoming epic battle between the Primeval Champion and the King Of The Apes. The series will be written and executive produced by Brian Duffield (Underwater, The Babysitter) and Jacob Robinson, with Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Blood Of Zeus) joining the project.

On the other hand, the upcoming Tomb Raider anime series will pick up the events after the reboot video game trilogy and follow Lara Croft's latest adventure 25 years since she was first introduced to the gaming world back in 1996. Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja) has been tapped to write and executive producer the said adaptation along with dj2 Entertainment Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dmitri M. Jackson (Sonic The Hedgehog), Stephan Bugaj, Howard Bliss and Jacob Robinson. The bow-and-arrow wielding heroine first appeared on the big screens in 2001's Lara Craft: Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie playing the titular role, followed by its 2003 sequel Lara Craft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle Of Life. After 15 years, Alicia Vikander took on the role of Lara Croft in the 2018 reboot and is expected to reprise the role in the upcoming sequel by Lovecraft Country's Misha Green.

Prior to the announcement of the Tomb Raider and Skull Island anime adaptations, Netflix announced a slate of animation shows that are slated to be shown on the streaming service in the coming months as part of its efforts to boost its library of anime titles. These include Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure, Thermae Romae Novae, High-Rise Invasion, Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan and Way Of The Househusband. It is also working on various animation projects based on popular video game titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher and Resident Evil as well as the anime adaptation of the Philippine graphic novel Trese.
