EA Sports NHL 22 is slated to become available across gaming store shelves worldwide on Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S as well as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One S on October 15, 2021 and promises a breakthrough hockey gaming experience powered by the Frostbite engine. Through the power of the Frostbite engine which is a first for the EA Sports NHL franchise, every real-world player and arena will have unrivaled visual detail while the addition of Superstar X-Factors will elevate the league's biggest stars with an all-new layer of class-based play.

NHL players featured in the game will be brought to life via overhauled player likeness, cloth animations and uniform micro-details delivered in higher resolution to make every stitch visible. Alongside these enhancements will come enhanced spatial awareness for players to track and react to the world around them. In addition to enhanced player detail and visual fidelity, on-ice gameplay will see an upgrade as well with new physically accurate stick interactions. “Developing NHL 22 with the Frostbite engine is letting us truly bring the series into the next generation. The visual upgrade is impressive on its own, but the Frostbite engine is also giving us the power to create a lot of realism that you’ll really notice once you play," said EA Vancouver Producer Clement Kwong.

Superstar X-Factors, on the other hand, is a game-changing system that unleashes unique abilities for the game's best players with traits inspired by their individual real-world skills. The system brings two key elements that can help elevate the hockey's elite and break them away from the pack: Zone Abilities which bring game-breaking enhancements to the best players and Superstar Abilities representing upper echelon skills reserved for athletes playing at the next level. These will not only bring new facets to gameplay but also add new dimensions to Franchise Mode, Be A Pro, Hockey Ultimate Team and World Of Chel. Hockey encompasses a diverse community of passionate players united by their love for the sport and NHL 22 is embracing this culture by adding new features across modes in the coming months and a rich live service set to become operational beyond launch.

Toronto Maple Leafs superstar center Auston Matthews, whose world-class skills personify what it means to be an X-factor on the ice, is the cover athlete for NHL 22 after an incredible 2020-21 season which included winning the prestigious Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for the most number of goals scored in the regular season. “I’m thrilled to be working with EA SPORTS again and returning to the ice in NHL 22. This year, Superstar X-Factors bring a whole new level of elite competition and strategy to the game, and you’ll be able to unleash my ‘Shock and Awe’ ability for exciting shots at the net.” EA Sports NHL 22 is available for pre-order which will come with a variety of bonus in-game content once the pre-order is made.
