GCash Celebrates World Environment Day With 2.4 Million Trees Planted Through GForest

GCash, the Philippines’ leading mobile wallet, surpasses its target of planting 2.3 million trees by end-2023 in time for this year’s celebration of World Environment Day. As of June 2023, GCash has already planted 2.4 million actual trees through its digital platform GForest. Celebrating its 50th year, this annual movement led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) enjoins millions of people globally to protect and restore the Earth. It calls on both public and private organizations, as well as individuals, to contribute in creating a more sustainable world.
Since the launch of GForest in 2019, GCash, together with its partners, has been championing awareness for environmental conservation and green practices, connecting Filipinos wherever they are, and creating a better tomorrow for them through the app’s wide and inclusive digital ecosystem. To achieve its sustainability objectives, GCash has worked closely with local government units and local and international partner organizations for tree planting, marketing, and technology. GCash, through its partners, has already planted seedlings across the country in all three major islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. In Luzon, the sites are Ipo Watershed (220K trees), La Mesa Ecopark (160K trees), and Culion, Palawan (325k trees). In the Visayas, the sites are Luyang Watershed (600K trees), Tañon Strait (550K trees), and most recently, Negros Oriental (500k trees). Lastly in Mindanao, the sites are in the provinces of Sarangani (General Santos) and South Cotabato (Koronadal), both totaling one million trees.
GCash introduced GForest in 2019 as the first-ever sustainability feature by a fintech company in the Philippines to enable Filipinos to plant trees and contribute to the reforestation efforts in the Philippines. GCash users earn green energy by using the app’s various convenient services such as Pay Bills, Send Money, Cash-in, Bank Transfer, and GSave. The collected energy can then be used to plant a virtual tree via the GForest while GCash and its partners plant the actual trees on various sites across the country. To date, GForest has grown its number of users to 13 million, making it one of the biggest digital environmental movements in the country.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) recently joined hands with TGP (The Generics Pharmacy) to strengthen its push for SIM registration in Davao City. Joining TGP’s recent Kaibigan sa Kalusugan Medical Caravan at the Matina Crossing and Matina Aplaya Gymnasium, Smart set up SIM registration booths to provide assistance to Smart and TNT customers in the area.
“Our commitment to bringing our SIM registration efforts closer to our customers remains strong. We are grateful to partners like TGP for enabling us to us deploy SIM registration booths during their own events. This kind of partnership allows us to reach our customers and assist them in registering their Smart and TNT SIMs, especially senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those using non-data phones,” said PLDT and Smart Senior Vice President and Consumer Sales Group Head Alex O. Caeg. “We are glad to be of help to our partner Smart in their initiative to assist Filipinos in SIM registration nationwide. We understand that SIM registration can help our customers keep their connectivity active, allowing them to access the necessary platforms for their health and well-being. This TGP Medical Caravan which reached hundreds and hundreds of patients and customers is a good platform to reach out to our kababayans,” said TGP General Manager Joanne Dawn S. Arceo.
Smart has rolled out thousands of assisted SIM registration booths across the country, extending priority assistance to senior citizens and persons with disabilities, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), LGUs, malls, schools, and other community partners. New and existing Smart Prepaid and TNT subscribers may also visit PLDT and Smart stores or access Smart’s SIM registration portal through https://simreg.smart.com.ph/. Postpaid users, meanwhile, are considered registered using existing account details provided consistent with the SIM Registration Act. All SIM users are required to register their SIMs by July 25, 2023, according to Republic Act No. 11934 or the Subscriber Identity Module Registration Act.

Celebrate love this Pride Month with this year’s Pride PH Festival that can be streamed by viewers online on the official Facebook pages of ABS-CBN Entertainment, iWantTFC, and MYX on June 24. Apart from ABS-CBN’s digital platforms, the Pride PH Festival can also be accessed through various online and streaming channels such as Pride PH‘s Facebook page and the Quezon City Government’s official Facebook page.
Quezon City will once again host Pride PH’s Pride Festival, one of the broadest networks of LGBTQIA+ individuals and organizations, while Pride PH is the organizer of Quezon City’s Pride Festival, with the theme “Love, Laban: A Celebration of the Fight for Love in All Forms and Ways". Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has expressed full support to Pride PH and its Pride Festival happening on June 24 at the Quezon Memorial Circle. “More than a celebration, the Pride Festival is a call to end the discrimination, hate, and prejudice among members of the LGBTQIA+. We are holding this activity not because this sector is seeking special treatment. Rather, what they long for is simply a halt to the undeserved ill treatment and denial of opportunities they continue to suffer from,” said Mayor Belmonte.
The Pride Festival is a one day event that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community through three major activities - Pride Expo, Pride March, and Pride Night. “The pride marches are seen as safe spaces that provide a venue to push for equality and inclusivity. And while these festivities remain celebratory, Pride is still a protest and should remain so. Not until the LGBTQIA+ community no longer needs to fight for their human rights, their right to love, and the freedom to be their true authentic selves,” says Miss Trans Global 2020 and Pride PH's lead convenor Mela Habijan.
