GMA Integrated News, GMA Regional TV (RTV) and Synergy brought together the Network's multimedia journalists for a discourse on the importance and impact of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) during the “GMA Masterclass Series: In the Age of AI” last September 30, 2023 at Studio 5, GMA Network Center. Among the participants of the special session were anchors, correspondents, video journalists, program managers, station managers and writers from GMA Integrated News (GMAIN), GMA Regional TV and Synergy, and Super Radyo.
Providing insightful discussion on the power of AI was the panel composed of GMAIN News Producer Mav Gonzales, Astro Awani Multiplatform News Innovation Lead Editor Shafizan Johari, University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law Associate Professor Atty. Jesus Disini Jr., CirroLytix Research Services Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Dr. Dominic Vincent Ligot and GMAIN Digital Division's Segment Production Specialist Gabrielle Cayetano. Also present to give their thoughts on AI were GMAIN Assistant Vice President and Deputy Head for Social Media Aileen Perez, GMA New Media Inc. (NMI) Vice President and Head of Creatives Rufino Ramil Escarda and GMAIN Senior Social Media Producer Theodore Ortiz. As one of the country's renouned broadcast journalists, Gonzales cited how a media organization in Singapore tapped A.I. as a helpful tool in the work of journalists. “The first reason kung bakit nila ginagamit ito ay to reduce effort on mundane and repetitive tasks. If you make the work lighter for them, then they will be able to produce better stories,” she said. Disini, on the other hand, underscored the importance of ethics in A.I. “[There is a] need for ethics in A.I. because we can't allow people to feed their addictions. And because I think there are serious social problems that can arise from that,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Ligot provided some meaningful insights on generative A.I. “We have to think about how technologies evolved in the past and how we should transcend those technologies. Ganyan din 'yung A.I.,” he explained. Cayetano then emphasized, “A.I. cannot replace an entire generation, including Gen Z or any other generation. You just have to be part of the game and make sure you're making use of A.I. because, after all, A.I. is worth trying out.” During his message, GMA Network Senior Vice President and Head of GMA Integrated News, Regional TV, and Synergy Oliver Victor B. Amoroso asserted that the company's best asset remains to be the employees even with the existence and integration of A.I. Amoroso also highlighted the committee that was formed to further study A.I. as well as the guidelines to be followed by Kapuso journalists with the use of the technology, “We've also formed a sub-committee in GMA Integrated News to take an active role in looking into A.I. in news operations to ensure that, should it be used, the technology will not compromise our non-negotiable as a news organization.”
The special session also featured the country's first-ever A.I.-generated sportscasters Maia and Marco, which was first introduced during the opening of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99. “Lest we forget, GMA has never been afraid to take risks, to take bold, pioneering steps. The fact is, A.I. is here. The responsibility of handling it lies with us. I am glad we have chosen to face it with courage,” Amoroso added. The session was hosted by veteran broadcast journalist Pia Arcangel together with Sparkle GMA Artist Center talent, host, and sportscaster Martin Javier. Hannah Prescillas of All-Out Sundays' Queendom showcased her vocal prowess through entertaining performances. Last April 29, GMA Masterclass Series teamed up with GMA Integrated News for the very first time for a special session for the Network's multimedia journalists. The panel consisted of Broadcast Journalist Chino Gaston, Senior Researcher Agatha Guidaben, Social Media Team Asst. Manager Audrey Domasian, and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWP) Senior Language Researcher Jeslie del Ayre-Luza. The award-winning 'GMA Masterclass Series' continues to hold sessions in various cities and provinces in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to provide a safe space for intellectual discourse about different relevant and timely topics across various fields.
