Prior to the announcement of nominees, the annual film event presents the Box Office Heroes Award to the lead stars of last year’s highest-grossing films which successfully attracted audiences back to cinemas, significantly helping the local film sector bounce back. “Each of the films cited in this year’s Box Office Hero award has earned more than Php100M at the box office. The figures they produced are more than enough to inspire the industry to continue producing commercially viable and artistically impactful films," said SPEEd (Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors) president an entertainment editor of Pilipino Star Ngayon and Pang Masa Salve Asis.
Initially announced in February, the Box Office Heroes special award will be given to Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Piolo Pascual, Alden Richards, Julia Montes, and Kathryn Bernardo. Dingdong and Marian are recognized for their 49th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry "Rewind." The family drama garnered widespread acclaim and a strong box office performance, is currently the highest-grossing local film of all time, earning over Php1B in box-office gross sales during its commercial run. Alden and Julia will receive the accolade for their film "Five Breakups and A Romance." Apart from their characters resonating deeply with audiences, the romantic drama film earned more than Php100M at the local box office. Another Eddys Box Office Hero is Kathryn, who captivated the public in her unconventional role in "A Very Good Girl". The dark comedy thriller earned a spot among last year's top cinematic achievers, tallying Php100M box office gross. It is the first local film to breach the 100-million mark in box office revenue since the global COVID-19 pandemic. Piolo will be honored for his role in "Mallari", the 49th MMFF's second box office winner, which earned Php225M commercially.
As in previous years, the highlight of the awards night will be the tribute to the new batch of Eddys Movie Icons who are considered pillars of the movie industry. The Movie Icon Awards for 2024 will be given to Nova Villa, Leo Martinez, Lito Lapid, Eva Darren, and Gina Alajar in recognition of their unwavering love, dedication, and continuous efforts to elevate the quality of every Filipino film. Leading the roster of special awards is the Isah V. Red Award for philanthropy presented to former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte. Other honors include the Joe Quirino Award for outstanding entertainment media, given to Korina Sanchez-Roxas, and the Manny Pichel Award, presented to Ronald Constantino. This year’s Rising Producer Circle Award will be given to Mentorque Productions while a posthumous award will be given to the late comic strip creator and critically-acclaimed movie producer and director Carlo J. Caparas in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Philippine movie industry.
The 7th edition of The Eddys (Entertainment Editors’ Choice) Awards will be held on July 7, 2024 at the Ceremonial Hall, Marriott Grand Ballroom, Newport World Resorts, Pasay City. A delayed telecast of the awards night can be watched on ALLTV on July 14 at 10:00 pm. The film event presented in collaboration with Newport World Resorts, ALLTV and Sound Check will be directed by award-winning actor and filmmaker Eric Quizon with Brightlight Productions as line producer and Globe Telecom as major sponsor. The film event is also supported this year by Beautéderm by Rhea-Anicoche Tan, Unilab, Camille Villar, former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson, and Echo Jam. The Eddys is an annual event dedicated to honoring the talents and contributions of filmmakers, actors, writers, directors, and producers in the Philippine film industry.
