Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, partnered with SPX Express to mobilize its resources to aid victims of Typhoon Carina. Through its disaster relief aid program Shopee Bayanihan, the platform donated relief goods to key cities that were severely affected by the typhoon such as Mandaluyong, Bulacan, and Parañaque. “Typhoon Carina left a devastating impact on many Filipinos, leaving thousands of families in a state of calamity even after the storm has passed. At Shopee, we believe in the power of our platform to make a tangible difference in the lives of Filipinos, especially during times of crisis. By leveraging our extensive network and the dedication of our employees, we are able to mobilize quickly and provide much-needed relief to communities during this difficult time," said Shopee Philippines' Vincent Lee.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), over 1.8 million families in Metro Manila and its surrounding areas were heavily affected by the typhoon and the Southwest Monsoon with over 5,000 families taking shelter in evacuation centers. In response, Shopee and its logistics partner SPX Express together delivered 8,000 canned goods, 2,000 kilos of rice, 4,000 liters of water, 2,000 packs of noodles, and 5,000 packs of biscuits to affected communities. With the support of former Councilor Charisse Abalos-Vargas, Shopee employees also volunteered their time to distribute these relief goods to residents of Barangay Harapin Ang Bukas in Mandaluyong City under the guidance of Barangay Chairman Ricky Ogbac. Mandaluyong City Mayor Ben Abalos extended his gratitude to the platform for their outreach to the community, saying, “Shopee’s generous donation is a testament to their commitment to the well-being of our community. Beyond providing relief, this gesture has also inspired hope and resilience among our citizens.”
Meycauayan, Bulacan Vice Mayor Jojie Violago emphasized the importance of partners in providing for residents of the city, saying, "Our partnership with Shopee will cater to the needs of our constituents. It will uplift the everyday lives of our kababayans and will be of great support to their endeavors.” Parañaque Vice Mayor Joan Villafuerte also said, “The City of Parañaque through the Office of the Vice Mayor would like to thank both Shopee Philippines and SPX Express Philippines for their benevolence with the food relief they have granted for the Paraquenos at the onset of Typhoon Carina.” Guiguinto Bulacan Vice Mayor Banjo Estrella likewise shared that they were fortunate to be recipients of the platform’s relief aid, remarking, “The Municipal Government of Guiguinto and the 11th Sangguniang Bayan is very fortunate that Guiguinto was a recipient of Shopee Philippines and SPX Express Philippines’ relief aid. The relief that they extended to Guiguinteños helped a lot in our continuing effort to recover from the effects of Typhoon Carina."
Harnessing the power of technology and its robust ecosystem, Shopee also empowered its users to provide support for Typhoon Carina victims by purchasing donation vouchers for Caritas Manila, Gawad Kalinga, GMA Kapuso Foundation, and UNICEF through its e-commerce platform. Since its launch, Shopee’s Bayanihan initiative underscores the platform’s unwavering dedication to make a positive impact on the local community during times of crisis. As relief efforts continue, Shopee remains committed to help Filipinos overcome adversity by reinforcing the true spirit of bayanihan.
