Carlos Yulo, PH Paris 2024 Olympians Lead Honorees In PSA Awards Night

Carlos Yulo Is PSA Athlete Of The Year

Several athletes, including past Filipino Olympians, as well as top sports executives and organizations were honored for their efforts, achievements and contributions in 2024, a highly decorated and monumental year in Philippine sports, at the Philippine Sportswriters Association-San Miguel Corporation (PSA-SMC) Awards Night held last January 27, 2025 at the Manila Hotel. The Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) is the oldest media organization in the Philippines with membership consists of sportswriters and editors from various tabloids, newspapers, and sports websites in the country now led by The Philippine Star sports editor Nelson Beltran as president. 

With the theme “Golden Year, Golden Centenary”, the PSA Awards honored a total of 117 awardees from various sports. Among the notable names present in these festivities were Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go who is the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports. Leading this year's Honorees is the Philippines' first double Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo (Gymnastics) as Athlete Of The Year while Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo (Weightlifting) is inducted into the PSA's Hall Of Fame for making history as the Philippines' first-ever Olympic gold medalist. Nesthy Petecio (Boxing), the first Philippine boxer to achieve back-to-back Olympic podium finishes, and Aira Villegas (Boxing), who secured a bronze medal in her Olympic debut, were bestowed with the President's Award. Tolentino was hailed as Executive Of The Year for leading Team Philippines in hauling two gold medals and two bronze medals in Paris 2024 which is the country's all-time best performance in the global sporting spectacle in decades while the Gymnastics Association Of The Philippines is honored as the National Sports Association (NSA) Of The Year for honing talents such as double Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo. The PSA-SMC Awards Night also honors and recognizes young and promising athletes through the Tony Siddayao Award which is named after the late former Manila Standard editor who is considered the Dean of Philippine sportswriting. The recipients of the said award are: 
• Aleia Aielle Aguilar (Jiu-jitsu), winning the 22kg class in the 2024 World Festival Jiu-Jitsu Championships
• Alexander Gabriel Delos Reyes (Wushu), won gold in the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships
• Sophia Shekaina Catantan (Fencing), won gold in the junior women's foil of the fifth Southeast Asia Pacific Fencing Championships
• Jamesray Mishael Ajido (Swimming), won gold in the 200m backstroke of the 2024 Asian Open School Invitational Long Course Swimming Championships
• Behrouz Mohammad Mojdeh (Swimming), won gold in the boys' 12-14 100m butterfly of the 11th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships
