The global surge in Korean entertainment continues as Viu expands its library with a range of Korean variety shows, catering to fans seeking diverse content from idol competitions to reality-based programs. Korean variety shows have steadily gained popularity across Asia since the early 2000s, thanks to their unique formats, dynamic guest appearances, and relatable themes. These programs offer a mix of genres — from idol survival competitions to travel and lifestyle shows — highlighting Korean culture and the off-screen personalities of popular celebrities.

Idol survival shows for music fans
With K-pop dominating the global music scene, idol survival shows have attracted significant attention by showcasing the rigorous selection process for new groups. Project 7 is one such program featuring 99 contestants competing for a spot in a seven-member South Korean boy band. The show invites viewers to participate in group formation through interactive voting and challenges. Similarly, Universe League follows aspiring idols mentored by K-pop stars like Ten, Yangyang, and Lee Chang-sub as they compete to debut in a new boy group.

Reality programs highlight authentic experiences
Reality-based variety shows continue to draw audiences with their relatable and entertaining content. The second season of Whenever Possible focuses on the lives of ordinary Koreans, emphasizing the on-screen chemistry between Yoo Jae-suk and Yoo Yeon-seok. Meanwhile, Rented in Finland takes viewers to rural Finland where four Korean celebrities adapt to a self-sufficient lifestyle, offering both humorous and insightful moments.

Competitive shows offer high-stakes challenges
Korean variety shows known for their intense challenges have also found a global audience. Paik’s Les Misérables, hosted by celebrity chef Baek Jong-won, presents contestants with demanding cooking tasks designed to test their culinary skills and resilience. The show combines high-pressure competition with personal stories, creating an emotional connection with viewers.

These Korean variety programs are now available for streaming on Viu which expands its content library to give audiences access to diverse Korean entertainment and further fuel the hallyu wave worldwide.
