The rise of AI-generated child sexual abuse materials — where predators use artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate innocent images or create fake online identities to target children — is a deeply alarming digital threat and trend. Taking urgent notice of this disturbing rise in online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) content, PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) are stepping up efforts with partners to protect children through awareness campaigns, community education, and stronger digital safeguards.
“Given how easy it is for everyone, including children, to access the internet these days, we must be cautious and responsible in our online activities,” said educator Linmar Cayson who heads Santa Fe National High School in Bantayan Island in Cebu where 130 students and faculty members recently joined PLDT and Smart in the “#BeCyberSmart Against AI-Enabled OSAEC” symposium. Underscoring the key role that schools play in safeguarding their students in the digital space, Cayson added, “This is also relevant because these crimes could happen in Santa Fe, a popular tourist destination. We need to be vigilant and be more proactive in educating our students and teachers about these online crimes involving children.” As AI technology becomes increasingly used in producing child sexual abuse materials, PLDT and Smart’s #BeCyberSmart initiative seeks to equip young people and educators with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe online. It provided guidance on detecting AI-generated sexual abuse content, understanding the behaviors of online predators, and adopting safe online practices.

In the same town, PLDT and Smart also extended support for longtime partner Bidlisiw Foundation’s “Pista Sa Kaalam” (Fiesta Of Knowledge) cyber-caravan which aligns with Dutch-based non-government organization (NGO) Terre des Hommes Netherlands’ Project SCROL (Safety for Children and Their Rights Online). Kids and teens from across Santa Fe and Bantayan enjoyed fun, interactive booths for four days, enabling them to learn how to stay safe online and become internet safety champions. Aligned with Project SCROL, the caravan also sought to inspire broader community involvement in online child protection. At PLDT and Smart’s booth, participants picked up social media do’s and don’ts. The group also provided seamless digital connectivity, powered by PLDT Home’s reliable fiber connectivity.

“We are all-in when it comes to protecting children online, and we will continue to raise awareness, empower communities, and create a safer online space for children and help end OSAEC,” said PLDT and Smart Head of Public Engagement - Visayas Relations Marylou B. Gocotano. These efforts underscore PLDT and Smart’s commitment to helping the country attain United Nations Sustainability Development Goal (UNSDG) No. 16 which promotes just, peaceful, and inclusive societies.
