SM Foundation Revamps Health Centers To Protect Filipino Children

Health centers across the Philippines play a critical role in delivering the national government’s vaccination program, providing free basic immunizations to infants and children under five, according to government officials. Republic Act No. 10152, or the Mandatory Infants and Children Health Immunization Act of 2011, requires vaccinations against tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and H. influenza type B. The law allows the Department of Health (DOH) to add other vaccines as needed and aims to reduce child mortality and morbidity from vaccine-preventable diseases.
Health centers help decongest hospitals by offering these immunizations and other primary care services closer to communities. SM Foundation has partnered with the government to improve access by renovating and rehabilitating barangay health centers, providing upgraded facilities and medical equipment. Earlier this year, the foundation turned over a rehabilitated San Vicente Health Center in Quezon City, one of 66 centers in the city. The facility serves four barangays and delivers comprehensive primary care anchored in national and local health programs.
Following this, SM Foundation inaugurated the renovated Putik Health Center in Zamboanga City. The center provides immunizations under the Expanded Program for Immunization, nutrition and family planning services, maternal care, tuberculosis treatment, surveillance of emerging infectious diseases, and environmental sanitation programs. To date, SM Foundation has upgraded more than 200 health centers nationwide, supporting the government’s efforts to expand basic health and medical services to the community level.

Foreign Elite Runners Rule Ayala Philippine Marathon 2026

Kenya’s Anderson Saitoti and Ethiopia’s Beshadu Bekele Bedane outran the competition to win the Ayala Philippine Marathon 2026 on over the weekend at Ayala Avenue in Makati City. The international runners stood out from the 11,000-strong field as they stamped their class in the event organized by RUNRIO with Ayala Foundation as title sponsor as it also served as the kickoff for the 2026 Philippine Marathon Majors.
Saitoti clocked an impressive 2:19:22 to secure the overall title followed by Ethiopia’s Abdi Asefa Kabede (2:20:22) in the men’s division. The Philippines’ own Edsel Moral (2:25:42) and Eduard Flores (2:28:46) were also in hot pursuit while Kenya’s Eric Chepsiror (2:29:11) completed the top five. Bedane was also crowned the champion after timing at 2:44:52, in front of Kenya’s Truphena Chepchichir (2:47:30), Ethiopia’s Sifen Kidane Melka (2:52:53), Kenya’s Pamela Chepkoech (2:58:01), and Eloisa Cusi (3:00:52). “We’re humbled by the outpouring of support and this sold out event is proof that the Philippines has indeed embraced the active lifestyle through running,” said RUNRIO president Rio de la Cruz of this race which had Gatorade as official sports drink, Cristalino Spring as the official hydration partner, Angel’s Burger as official snack partner, and the support of the Department of Tourism (DOT).
