Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU The NEU), further strengthens its position as a pioneer in innovative and industry-responsive education after being granted Government Recognition (GR) No. 1, s. 2026 by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) last April 2026 as a higher education institution (HEI) duly recognized to offer University-Industry Micro-Credentials, affirming the University as the first HEI in the country granted such recognition for micro-credential offerings.

In 2023, through Board of Regents Resolution No. 06, s. 2023, the University formally institutionalized its Microcredentialing Program — a forward-looking initiative designed to deliver specialized, stackable, and industry-validated training aligned with emerging technologies and workforce demands. Following this, in January 2025, the Commission on Higher Education promulgated CMO No. 1, s. 2025 or the Guidelines for Micro-Credential Development, Approval and Recognition in Higher Education. Notably, BatStateU The NEU currently offers 17 CHED-recognized industry micro-credential courses — the highest number among HEIs under the initiative — and is further expanding its portfolio through additional courses being developed and submitted for recognition, reinforcing the University’s leadership in advancing flexible and industry-responsive learning pathways in the Philippine higher education landscape. As the country’s first university-industry micro-credentials initiative co-developed and co-delivered with industry partners, the program has established pathways that provide short-term upskilling opportunities supplementary to both informal and formal degree education, enabling learners to acquire specialized competencies while supporting workforce adaptability. The recognition affirms the quality and relevance of BatStateU’s micro-credentials which are designed to equip learners with in-demand competencies aligned with the rapidly evolving workforce requirements across engineering, information technology, construction, project management, and digital transformation sectors. Implemented through the University’s Center for Innovation in Engineering Education (CIEE), the BatStateU-Industry Micro-Credentials ensure that course content, learning outcomes, and competency assessments remain aligned with current industry standards and emerging global trends. University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo emphasized, “More than institutional achievement, this recognition represents a strategic response to the evolving realities of higher education and employment where lifelong learning, specialized competencies, and industry relevance have become critical drivers of professional success.”

Bridging Education And Industry Demands
The recognition comes at a time when industries worldwide are experiencing accelerated digital transformation and increasing demand for specialized technical skills. Employers are progressively prioritizing demonstrable competencies and industry certifications alongside traditional academic credentials, particularly in fields such as data science, cybersecurity, automation, project systems, and digital engineering. BatStateU’s micro-credential framework addresses these shifts by providing agile and competency-based learning opportunities delivered through online, hybrid, and face-to-face modalities. Since its implementation, the University has recorded more than 1,100 completers across its micro-credential offerings. The program includes nearly a thousand student enrollees and completers under credit-bearing implementation alongside more than 150 professional learners participating through non-credit pathways. The growing learner participation reflects increasing demand for short-term, high-impact learning programs that provide immediate workplace value and support career advancement.

Empowering Learners With Industry-Relevant Skills
BatStateU-Industry Micro-Credentials are implemented in partnership with globally recognized industry leaders including Microsoft, Cisco Networking Academy, CIM Technologies Inc., Geodata Systems Technologies Inc., and DOLE-accredited safety training organizations. Through these collaborations, learners are trained using industry-grade platforms, tools, and standards that strengthen real-world technical competencies. Current offerings include courses in the areas of data science, cybersecurity, and project management as well as programs in Internet of Things (IoT), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) with additional industry-aligned courses currently being developed in collaboration with more industry partners. Upon completion, learners receive verifiable digital badges and credentials that may be showcased in professional portfolios and online employment platforms, enhancing employability and professional visibility.

Transforming Higher Education Through Flexible Learning
First launched during the inaugural Government, University, and Industry Leaders (GUILd) Summit last October 14, 2023, the BatStateU-Industry Micro-Credentials initiative was envisioned as a transformative educational model responsive to the rapidly changing demands of work and innovation. As a pioneer in industry-based micro-credentials in Philippine higher education, BatStateU The NEU continues to advance educational models that prioritize accessibility, adaptability, and workforce relevance, reinforcing its commitment to producing future-ready learners capable of thriving in technology-driven environments.

As industries continue to evolve, BatStateU The NEU remains steadfast in engineering innovative pathways that empower learners, strengthen industries, and contribute to national development through transformative education.
