Batangas State University, Aboitiz Economic Estates Strengthen Industry-Academe Collaboration Through Industry Advisory Council

As industries adopt advanced manufacturing, automation, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies, universities are under increasing pressure to ensure that what students learn remains relevant by the time they graduate. Increasingly, that means inviting employers to help shape education, not only by offering internships, but by contributing to curriculum development, mentoring students, and identifying the skills graduates will need in a rapidly changing workplace. 

This is the approach being advanced by Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU The NEU), which formally inducted and onboarded 22 industry leaders, including 17 members of its Industry Advisory Council (IAC) and five Industry Mentors, during the BatStateU Industry Advisory Council Induction and Onboarding Program recently held at the Talent Edge Hub in LIMA Estate. Situated within one of the country’s largest manufacturing and industrial hubs, the initiative also responds to the evolving workforce requirements of CALABARZON which consistently contributes the largest share to Philippine manufacturing output and hosts thousands of industrial enterprises across electronics, semiconductors, automotive, food processing, logistics, and advanced manufacturing. By strengthening the connection between engineering education and industry, the partnership seeks to develop talent where demand for technical professionals continues to grow. The induction program institutionalizes industry participation in academic planning, enabling them to contribute directly to curriculum enhancement, mentorship, professional learning experiences, and workforce preparation across BatStateU’s engineering and engineering technology programs. “The Industry Advisory Council creates a structured mechanism for industry to participate in the continuous enhancement of our academic programs. By bringing together leaders from key sectors, we gain valuable insights that help ensure our graduates develop the competencies, technical expertise, and professional attributes required by today’s workforce. These perspectives also help us keep our programs responsive to emerging industry developments and future skills requirements,” said University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo. 

Closing The Gap Between Education And Employment
The demand for graduates who can readily adapt to evolving technologies continues to grow across industries. According to the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025, nearly 40 percent of workers’ existing skills are expected to change by 2030 as organizations accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and digital technologies. Engineering, technology, and green economy occupations are among those projected to experience sustained demand. For universities, this means academic excellence must be complemented by continuous engagement with industry to ensure graduates possess not only strong theoretical foundations but also the practical competencies, professional skills, and workplace readiness expected by employers. This challenge is particularly significant for engineering education, where technological advances often outpace traditional curriculum review cycles. Strong industry partnerships therefore provide universities with a practical mechanism for continuously aligning academic programs with evolving professional practice. 

From Consultation To Co-Creation
The BatStateU Industry Advisory Council establishes a structured and continuing mechanism through which industry leaders help shape engineering and technology education. Its members, composed of senior executives and technical experts from sectors including automotive manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, logistics, food production, packaging, industrial manufacturing, and consumer goods, will regularly provide insights on workforce trends, emerging technologies, professional standards, and future skills requirements. These perspectives will help inform curriculum enhancement, laboratory development, learning outcomes, capstone projects, and competency frameworks across BatStateU’s academic programs. Beyond its advisory function, Council members will actively participate in student learning through guest lectures, professional mentoring, curriculum consultations, workplace exposure, and experiential learning initiatives that connect classroom instruction with actual industry practice. Aboitiz Economic Estates and Aboitiz Land President and CEO Rafael P. Fernandez De Mesa shared, “By bringing industry closer to education, we strengthen workforce readiness while helping build the talent pipeline needed to support long-term economic growth.” The induction was followed by a series of onboarding sessions designed to prepare Council members for their roles as industry partners in education. Discussions covered the Council’s strategic functions, the Industry Mentorship Program, and the Industry Lecturers Program — key components of BatStateU’s Industry-Based Learning framework that enable professionals to support curriculum development, mentor students, and bring current industry practice into the classroom. The newly inducted members represent companies operating within LIMA Estate, enabling students to engage with professionals working at the forefront of Philippine industry. 

How Industry-Based Learning Works
The Industry Advisory Council forms an integral part of BatStateU’s Industry-Based Learning framework, an educational model that embeds industry engagement throughout a student’s academic journey instead of limiting workplace exposure to a single internship before graduation. Industry partners participate in multiple stages of learning — from student selection and curriculum development to selected classroom instruction and the supervision of capstone projects that address real engineering and operational challenges. A defining feature of the framework is the Extended Professional Placement, a two-semester structured immersion that combines workplace experience with academic supervision and professional mentoring. Industry partners also help assess student competencies and graduate outcomes, creating a continuous feedback loop that enables academic programs to keep pace with changing technologies, workplace practices, and professional standards. Supporting this ecosystem is the Industry Partnership Center which serves as the University’s coordinating hub for industry collaboration by facilitating curriculum co-design, faculty immersion, research partnerships, professional placements, and other strategic engagements with industry. 

Building An Engineering Campus Within An Industrial Ecosystem
The IAC also supports the continuing development of the BatStateU LIMA Campus, a 10-hectare engineering campus located within LIMA Estate. Designed around the principles of IBL, the campus places students within an active industrial environment where learning extends beyond classrooms into manufacturing facilities, engineering workplaces, collaborative research, and professional communities. Its pioneering cohort of approximately 800 first-year engineering and engineering technology students is expected to begin classes in August 2026, marking the first phase of a long-term vision to establish the country’s first learning hub dedicated to industry-based engineering education. By locating the campus within one of the Philippines’ leading industrial estates, the University positions learning within the same ecosystem where engineering solutions are developed, tested, and deployed. The model also supports the long-term talent requirements of CALABARZON’s manufacturing sector by enabling closer collaboration among industry, faculty, researchers, and future engineers.

The formal induction of the Industry Advisory Council reflects a broader shift in how universities prepare graduates for the future of work.
