The future of Philippine cinema took center stage as the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), welcomed around 100 students and teachers to the Student Short Film Caravan held last October 10, 2026 at the MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) Annex Building in Pasig City.

Designed as a creative launchpad, the caravan invites young Filipinos to discover the craft of filmmaking through hands-on workshops and intimate conversations with respected industry practitioners. The initiative is a key part of the build-up to the 2026 MMFF Student Short Film Competition, reinforcing the MMFF's commitment to nurturing emerging voices. Opening the day, MMDA Chairman Romando S. Artes warmly welcomed the participants and lauded their passion for storytelling. He shared an inspiring story of a student from a similar caravan in Pangasinan who went on to earn recognition in an international short film competition, noting that many alumni of past MMFF student workshops have since found their place working with production teams across the local film and entertainment industry. MMFF Executive Chairman, Undersecretary Frisco S. San Juan Jr., encouraged the students to turn inward for inspiration — to explore their own interests, mine their personal experiences, and tell stories that matter. He expressed hope that the caravan would not only hone their technical talents but also deepen their love and appreciation for Philippine cinema. 21 schools from across Metro Manila joined the full-day creative immersion including Mandaluyong College of Science and Technology, Andres Bonifacio Integrated School, City of Mandaluyong Science High School, Mandaluyong High School, Ateneo de Manila University, Bonifacio Javier National High School, Mapúa University–Makati, Mapúa University, MINT College, Kabayanan Integrated School, San Juan National High School, San Juan City Science High School, CIIT College of Innovation and Integrated Technology, Rizal Technological University–Pasig, San Juan City Integrated School, Salapan Integrated School, University of Makati, Mataas na Paaralang Neptali A. Gonzales, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology–Manila Campus, De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, and St. Jude College–Manila. Notably, many of the participating schools come from Mandaluyong and San Juan, two of the proud host cities of MMFF 2026.

The whole-day program was built around the core pillars of filmmaking — screenwriting, visual storytelling, and acting — giving students a complete view of how an idea is developed and brought to life on screen. Acclaimed filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama led the sessions on screenwriting and visual storytelling, guiding students through an engaging workshop on structure, perspective, and finding their voice. For performance, award winning actress in film and in theater Kakki Teodoro, together with performing artist Jim Ferrer, led the acting lessons and interactive presentations, helping students understand character, presence, and collaboration on set. The caravan also brought the students face-to-face with icons of the industry. Award-winning actress Janice de Belen joined a candid question-and-answer session moderated by Teodoro where she shared her journey in film and television, insights on working with production teams, and practical advice on building a sustainable career in entertainment. In a highlight of the day, National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee sat for a masterful Q&A on storytelling and writing for the screen, moderated by MMFF Sookesperson Noel Ferrer. Lee spoke about creating compelling, truthful characters, drawing inspiration from everyday life, and writing stories that resonate deeply with Filipino audiences. Through the School Caravan, the MMFF and its partners continue to empower students to strengthen their creative skills, gain confidence in sharing their own stories, and become active champions of Philippine cinema.
