Individuals and organizations continue to take advantage of the World Wide Web and the recent issues happening around the world to create fake and illegitimate news items that mislead people away from the truth. Unfortunately for them, a group of Filipino journalists recently developed a new system that can block these reports from social media news feeds and address the spread of misinformation online.

FakeBlok, a project made in collaboration with the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines and the Center of Media Freedom and Responsibility, is a downloadable extension installed on Google Chrome that can block and gray out articles from fake news sites on a Facebook user's news feed. The extension also allows netizens to submit sites that you think include fake news articles for verification whether the site is illegitimate or not. Those who want to get rid of fake news sites from their Facebook news feeds may download FakeBlok for free on the Chrome Web Store here.

Makati City Goes Digital with MAKATIZEN App

In celebration of its 347th founding anniversary, the city government of Makati recently launched an app that can bring its services closer to people.

Developed in collaboration with Neo-Converge ICT Solutions Inc. and Voyager Innovations Inc. and initially available on Google Play, the MAKATIZEN app brings important information and civic services to the residents of Makati in a more engaging and convenient way through the use of their mobile devices. It offers features that would surely benefit the city's citizens including up-to-the-minute advisories on the city's programs and upcoming events, information on how and why to invest and start a business in Makati, an in-app marketplace where users can shop items and souvenirs and receive exclusive discounts, and instant point-to-point shuttle service booking which is initially available for government employees.

The best thing about the new service is that young residents of Makati City will not be worried about spending their mobile data-bound cash to use the app because it is accessible for free via Voyager Innovations' Freenet platform. All they need to do is download and install the freenet mobile app on Google Play and use their Smart, Sun Cellular, and Talk n'Text mobile number to get access to not only MAKATIZEN, but also apps and sites available on the site without any data charges.
