The said award is given out to artists who have made significant contributions to the local movie industry through the years and not just by his or her outstanding performances in movies.

Anyway, the 40th Gawad Urian which is considered by local film critics as the Oscars of Philippine Cinema is slated to have its awards night on July 20, 2017 at Studio 10 of ABS-CBN which will be aired live and exclusive on Cinema One. The said awards night is made possible by respectable pillars in the local movie industry that make up the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino led by Tito Genova Valiente as its chairman.
