After
being hailed as the best song of Himig Handog 2017, it was a bit surprising to
learn that the feel-good song "Titibo-Tibo" would make its way to the
top of Spotify Philippines' Top 50 charts which is usually being dominated by
foreign artists. It is good to know that many Filipino music lovers today are
enjoying a happy love song considering that it was sung by no less than
24-year-old Moira Dela Torre.
Who
would have thought that one of the unknown auditionees in The Voice of the
Philippines turns out to be one of the biggest breakout stars in Philippine
music? Well, you may think that she started out as one of the many aspirants
who have cover versions of popular songs gaining traction on YouTube. I don't
know if that's true but she has something unique that would later become
attributed to her success in the local music industry.
She
was tapped to sing the theme song of Star Cinema's blockbuster movie "Love
You To The Stars and Back" which is actually her own rendition of the
popular Filipino love song "Torete" originally interpreted by
Moonstar 88. But she was first known for her own original song "Malaya"
which was used as one of the songs featured in the 2016 Viva Films romantic
comedy hit Camp Sawi.
These
songs would become consistent top hits on the digital music streaming Spotify
and make Moira the only OPM artist whose songs are listed in the top 20 of
Spotify PH's Top 50. She would go on to become the first OPM artist to top the
said charts based on data released last December 4, 2017 while her song
"Malaya" is highly regarded as one of the top ten most streamed songs
on Spotify for the year 2017. But like all the other breakout artists who have
bursted out of the music scene, these achievements are just the beginning with
her debut album coming out next year.
