The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have forged a joint memorandum which extends the validity period of prepaid mobile loads from up to 120 days to a universal period of one year. It would eventually take effect at the beginning of 2018 which should be considered a welcome gift for about 130 million mobile users in the Philippines.

However, the full implementation of the joint memorandum won't be so quick and easy. Prepaid loads worth Php300 and above are initially covered by the one-year validity period which kicked off last January 6, 2018, even they are available in a physical card. Meanwhile, those who are purchasing loads below Php300 may have to wait for six months since the extension is in its transition period.

Smart Communications and Globe Telecom, two prominent telecommunications companies in the Philippines, are already complied to the extension where they have made their own statements assuring mobile subscribers that the period will be worth their time and money. It should need to have strict regulations on the one-year validity period for prepaid load considering that it could make mobile scams more vigilant. Nevertheless, any Filipino mobile user will have more time to think on how to use his or her remaining mobile credits once the extension covers all prepaid load amounts in full.
