An
overwhelming narrative that has transpired all throughout the campaign of
hundreds of Filipino athletes competing in their respective sports in the
recently concluded 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia was the unprecedented
success of the country's female sports stars which has surprisingly caught the
eye of many local sports buffs, and it is undoubtedly one that will be
remembered considering that they are accountable for all of the country's gold
medals that have snared throughout the latest edition of the quadrennial event.
The
Philippines' own weightlifting fairy and 2016 Rio Summer Olympics silver
medalist Hidilyn Diaz; Filipino female golfers Yuka Saso, Bianca Pagdanganan,
and Lois Kaye Go; and Cebuana skateboarder Margielyn Didal have showcased their
own prowess and dedication to the sport they love and eventually proved to the
world the power and 'never say die' spirit of the Filipino female athlete.
Their success in the 2018 Asian Games as well as their own impactful
achievements in their young careers are enough for me to consider them as the
new gorgeous ladies of Philippine sports as well as being the latest annals in
the long history of women in Philippine sports.
Speaking
of history, the success of several Filipino female athletes in various international
competitions and quadrennial sporting events has been making a strong and
unquestionable impact on its own over the years. And if you have already bought
and read "The Olympic Movement in the Philippines" in any book store where
it is available, you may have been impressed at what these female athletes have
showcased and eventually captured the attention of the sports world during
their time.
