The
Philippines was tapped as the country of focus in the recently-concluded
Singapore Media Festival which took place at the Marina Bay Sands considering that the two countries are celebrating the
50th year anniversary of their diplomatic friendship. For Film Development
Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chairperson Liza Diño-Seguerra who led the
delegation of filmmakers and media company executives who have attended the
five-day affair, it was an honor for the Philippines to be chosen as the
event's country of focus and I believe it is worth it since the nation is
celebrating 100 years of local cinema next year.
In
case you don't know, the Singapore Media Festival is the umbrella organization
that stages different and familiar international media and film events in one
important affair. Among the events that have taken place in the said event were
the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) and the Asian Academy
Creative Awards. Now on its fifth year, the Singapore Media Festival aims to showcase
the latest hits and trends that are slated to make an impact in film and media
in the forthcoming future. True enough, the Philippines has definitely gained
some impactful milestones in the convention and among those which made a strong
noise was no less than ABS-CBN Corporation.
Eerie's World Premiere, Plus
A Remake In The Works
The
Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) was the essential avenue for
ABS-CBN Films, the film production arm of the Philippines' premiere media and
entertainment company, to stage a world premiere of its upcoming horror film Eerie
which is set to be shown in local cinemas by next year. Its main stars Charo
Santos-Concio and Bea Alonzo as well as its director Mikhail Red (Birdshot)
were there to grace the event. Following the successful global premiere showing
of Red's latest cinema masterpiece was the beginning of a new collaboration
that is slated to change the game in the local movie industry par none.
ABS-CBN
Films officially signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore-based production
firm Cre8 Productions where the two companies will be working on five upcoming
film projects following Eerie including a possible remake of the 1996 hit Peque Gallaga fantasy
film Magic Temple with Red as its director. On the other hand, Cre8 has also
signed a three-project collaboration deal with local production film Ursa Entertainment operated
by Jessel Monteverde who is the nephew of Regal Films' matriarch Lily
Monteverde.
MMK Wins Big In Asian
Academy Creative Awards
Maalaala
Mo Kaya (MMK), the longest running drama anthology in Asia that depicts stories
of life and inspiration from ordinary people, earned a new defining milestone
in the Philippine television scene after being hailed as the Best Single Movie/Teledrama
in the inaugural Asian Academy Creative Awards for its heartwarming "Toy
Gun" (Kotse-Kotsehan) episode. Topbilled by award-winning actresses Angel Locsin and Dimples Romana, the two-part special depicted two different perspective of a mother's love for her children.
The Asian Academy Creative Awards, which was part of the Singapore Media Festival, was created to "celebrate the best of Asian storytelling" and aims "to serve the creative industries as the pinnacle of their achievement in content creation and media production."
