Since its premiere on Easter Sunday 2019, ABS-CBN's Search For The Idol
Philippines has began its own journey of finding the next big thing in the
Philippine music scene from thousands of hopefuls coming from in and out of the
country and it looks like many of these aspiring artists hailing from different
walks of life are getting the attention of not just the television viewing
audience, but also the online world because of their astounding performances on
the auditions. But like most reality and talent shows in the Philippines that have
come and gone, there will always be a shower of negativity.
Since its inception on the small screens, Search For The Idol
Philippines garnered consistently higher ratings over its rival programs based
on data from Kantar Media and strong traction in the online world as evidenced
by multiple top trending topics on social media and a consistent wider streaming
statistics. Most of the audition pieces of hopefuls moving on to Idol City for
the next rounds of the competition have rocked the online world and were praised
and awed by many Filipino netizens. Not only that, some of them have even
impressed YouTube creators around the world as well as international music
icons and influencers.
One case in point is the audition performance of Lance Busa in the May
12 episode which caught the attention of American soul artist Anita Baker and
Brian McKnight even though it was not aired yet on television. Baker expressed
on social media that his performance has reminded her that soul music is alive and well while McKnight became Busa's biggest fan after following him on Instagram. Aside from the auditionees, Filipino netizens commended the Idol Philippines
judges - Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Vice Ganda, Moira Dela Torre, James Reid -
on how these performances fare well and the valuable points for those who want
to improve their prowess in hopes of becoming a better singer. Unfortunately
though, there are those who are not happy with the judges' take on the Idol
hopefuls.
The most recent example of that matter is Idol hopeful Luke Baylon who didn't
make the cut after his audition performance which astounded and impressed television
and online audiences alike but not three of the judges. It received heavy
criticism from many Filipino netizens and even several local music
personalities with most stating that Baylon deserves to stay in the
competition. However, James Reid defended their decision and reiterated that
people should anticipate for the top 20 and see for themselves why Luke is not worthy
of staying in Idol Philippines. I wholeheartedly agree with him and you should,
too, if you want to prove yourself wrong.
Like Pilipinas Got Talent and Pinoy Big Brother, Search For The Idol
Philippines is not a perfect show despite being a new weekend habit for millions
of Filipino households. However, it always strives to do better and show them
what the next Philippine Idol is all about. I implore you to continue watching Idol
Philippines every weekend nights and you might see something that will make you
say "What was I thinking?"
