Charo Santos-Concio, a multi-awarded veteran actress and film producer
and currently ABS-CBN Corporation's chief content officer, was honored and bestowed
upon her the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 67th Filipino Academy of Movie
Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards held on April 28, 2019 for her contributions
to Philippine cinema. Aside from Ma'am Charo, FAMAS also recognized and honored
female Filipino directors Laurice Guillen and the late Marilou Diaz-Abaya for "breaking
glass ceilings and developing Philippine cinema to where it is today."
According to the 67th FAMAS Awards Jury Head and multi-awarded
screenwriter Ricky Lee in a statement released by the Academy, the three
recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award have "pushed Filipino cinema forward
not only through their efforts in front and behind the cameras, but through
their dedication to create new platforms that would usher and nurture a new generation
of Filipino filmmakers." Through her Instagram account, Charo thanked one
of the most prestigious award-giving bodies for film in the Philippines for her
latest accolade and is hopeful that she would be able to contribute more to the
local cinema industry.
Charo entered the local film industry as a production assistant,
getting her breakthrough role in Lino Brocka's "Itim" and went on to
star and win recognitions in films such as Tisoy, Kisapmata, Kakabakaba Ka Ba?,
Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak, Hindi Mo Ako Kayang Tapatan, and Ang Babaeng Humayo where
she earned a Best Actress nomination at the 2017 Asian Film Festival Awards.
Aside from acclaimed on-screen portrayals, she was also part of iconic films
like Himala, Oro Plata Mata and Kisapmata as producer. She was also recognized
for championing the restoration and preservation of classic Filipino films
through the ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project and previously managed the Philippines'
premiere media and entertainment company as its president and CEO.
Meanwhile, three Kapamilya actresses have also earned special awards in
the 67th FAMAS Awards including It's Showtime host and multi-talented actress
Anne Curtis-Smith who is the first Filipina to receive the prestigious Fernando
Poe Jr. (FPJ) Memorial Award for her exemplary work and performance in film and
TV. Pinoy Big Brother Season 7 Big Winner Maymay Entrata won the German Moreno
Youth Achievement Award while veteran actress Maricel Soriano, who appears in
ABS-CBN's hit primetime drama series The General's Daughter, received the King
of Comedy Dolphy Memorial Award for her body of work. DZMM Radyo Patrol 630's
Jobert Sucaldito, on the other hand, won the Arturo Padua Memorial Award.
A number of movies in the 2018 Cinema One Originals Film Festival of ABS-CBN's
pay TV movie channel Cinema One won several awards in various categories
including "Never Tear Us Apart aka Fisting" which was one of the two
winners of the Grand Jury Prize for Film award and won Best Musical Score for
Erwin Romulo and Malek Lopez. "A Short History of a Few Bad Things"
lead star Victor Neri won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in
a Leading Role while Joem Bascon received the award for Outstanding Performance
by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in the movie "Double
Twisting Double Black". Finally, "Buhay Teatro" was able to win
Best Original Song for "Paglisan" which was written by Christela
Marquez, Aica Ganhinhin, Carl Papa and Erika Estacio with music by Teresa
Barrozo.
The FAMAS Awards is highly regarded as the oldest and most prestigious
award-giving bodies for film in the Philippines. Every calendar year, the
Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences is giving annual honors to the
movies for their achievements and the stars for their exemplary and outstanding
performances in the films that they were part of. The FAMAS organization is comprised
of award-winning movie screenwriters and esteemed movie columnists.
