ABS-CBN Corporation, the premiere media and entertainment company in
the Philippines, has officially partnered with Ten Bridges Media
Corporation/Atlantis Theatrical, one of country's most successful theatre companies, to
co-produce three award-winning Broadway musicals which marks the network's
entry into the Philippine theatre scene in its efforts to expand its experience
business.
The partnership officially kicked off last March 2019 with the
critically acclaimed "Angels in America: Millennium Approaches"
featuring Art Acuña, Pinky Amador, Angeli Bayani, Topper Fabregas, Cherie Gil,
Nelsito Gomez, Andoy Ranay and Markki Stroem. It will be followed by "Beautiful:
The Carole King Musical" which opened last June 14 at the Meralco Theatre,
Pasig City. Based on the book by Douglas McGrath, the musical will thrill viewers
on the inspiring life story of one woman's journey from a teenage songwriter to
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
Nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, the original Broadway
production takes audiences back to where it all began and eventually on the
ride of a lifetime from the string of pop classics she wrote for some of the
biggest acts in music during her time as a songwriter to her own life-changing,
chart-busting success with Tapestry. With unforgettable classics such as
"You've Got A Friend", "One Fine Day", "So Far
Away", "Take Good Care Of My Baby", "Up On The Roof",
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "Will You Love Me
Tomorrow" and "Natural Woman", this Tony and Grammy award-winning
musical phenomenon is one that will not be forgotten.
Capping off the year-long partnership is "Sweeney Todd", a
masterpiece from Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, starring Tony Award winner
and Broadway sensation Lea Salonga and local rock icon Jet Pangan. Having won eight
Tony Awards (including Best Musical) for its Broadway premiere and the Oliver Award
for Best New Musical, "Sweeney Todd" quickly rose to become a
worldwide musical phenomenon which simultaneously shocked, awed and eventually
delighted audiences across the globe due to its tasty and thrilling treat. This
radically different production of "Sweeney Todd" also happens to mark
the musical's 40th year anniversary since it opened on Broadway in 1979. It
will run on October at The Theatre at Solaire.
For ABS-CBN integrated events head Bobby Barreiro, the partnership is
one step forward in creating new possibilities for local theatre which has grown
tremendously in the past few years with an abundance of talent and
opportunities locally. On the other hand, Atlantis' Artistic Director Bobby
Garcia strongly stated that it will create a greater awareness for the Philippine
theatre scene as well as the world class talent on and off stage. The newly-forged
partnership comes timely as ABS-CBN and Atlantis are celebrating their respective
anniversaries.
