While
smoking continues to be a resilient daily trend for many Filipinos in today's
modern world amidst the industry's challenges and ordinary struggles, there are
those who are starting to indulge in an alternative way of smoking that is steadily
gaining traction from millennials and even regular smokers and that would be
the use of electronic cigarettes or simply known as vaping. These unique
artificial cigarettes have been making their way to various markets across
different parts of the country with some coming in different flavors and colors
for one to choose.
I
assume that many people are speculating that they consider vaping as a safer
and more unique alternative to smoking and e-cigarettes as less addictive than any
ordinary cigarette. However, their belief would probably become a bluff in the
case of the national government, more particularly the Department of Health. In
a recent press briefing, the DOH and various local medical societies are now warning ordinary Filipinos, young and
old alike, about the purchase and use of e-cigarettes as they think that these
devices are as dangerous as smoking. Whether you believe it or not, it's about
time that the health department speaks about vaping and against it.
I've
always been refraining myself from smoking all my life until now and vaping and
smoking do not suit my own style of living. When these electronic cigarettes
showed up, I was intrigued at how they are going to fare against what Filipinos
are getting accustomed to from then. Heck, I was eventually surprised to learn
that only a rare few could use their vapes for their talent as strongly
evidenced by one performance in Pilipinas Got Talent. Though there is no law or
act that can regulate the sale and use of e-cigarettes in the country, I think
it is fair for me to say that people who are interested in them should think
twice before deciding to purchase it.
DOH
stated in the said briefing that too much use of vape or electronic cigarettes
can cause serious health issues to the users that are slated to be as harmful
and dangerous as smoking. One health issue, to my surprise, is that vaping can
cause one to suffer lung cancer which is among the many reasons of Filipinos'
deaths every year. Another surprising fact is that these devices are not welcomed
in more than 30 countries around the world probably due to the dangers it can
bring. In any case, it is an alternative addiction that is set to be more
dangerous than smoking and it is up to us whether we can embrace it or not regardless
of the effects of using it whatever we want to.
