Sony's PlayStation 4 |
On
December 3, 1994, Sony officially launched its own home video game console, the
PlayStation, in Japan and was eventually released around the world along with a
lineup of decent but intriguing launch titles such as Battle Arena Toshinden, Ridge
Racer, The Raiden Project and more. Twenty five years later, the PlayStation
brand continues to break new grounds and set its own standards in the gaming
world with the PS4, PlayStation VR and the forthcoming PS5 in the near future.
However,
on the celebration of its silver year anniversary, the brand literally broke
more than just new grounds as it was officially recognized and hailed by the prestigious
Guinness World Records (GWR) as the best-selling video game console brand of
all time. Since late 1994, the Sony PlayStation family has sold more than 450
million units worldwide through the years which surpassed the combined sales of
every Nintendo home gaming system released - from the NES to the Nintendo
Switch - and even that of its handheld systems - from the GameBoy to the 3DS.
We're thrilled to be certified as the best-selling home video game console brand ever, with over 450 million units sold across the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 as of Nov. 7 according to @GWR.— PlayStation (@PlayStation) December 3, 2019

These
numbers are a strong testament that the PlayStation has further revolutionized
the video game industry and outshone its competitors with its systems that
sport impactful technological features and innovations as well as a wide and
outstanding game library boasting of some of the best that the four PlayStation
systems have to offer. That includes the brand's black sheep, the PlayStation
3, which is without question the least-selling among the four. But what about
the PlayStation's line of handheld systems that try to take a piece of the
handheld gaming pie? Well, the presence of the PSP and PS Vita may be a bit
ambitious for Sony to explore, the sales numbers of these two handhelds do not make
up much to stand out on their own compared to their home console counterparts
although it is interesting that the PSP is among the most popular systems to
indulge for retro gaming enthusiasts.
From
the first video game console to have sold 100 million units followed by the
fastest-selling to reach the said mark, the Sony PlayStation brand has grown
and evolved into an entertainment powerhouse that has been enjoyed and indulged
by millions of gamers and pop culture buffs across the globe. Twenty-five years
is such a long time, but it is enough for Sony to prove to the gaming world
that it can succeed in providing a platform where everyone can play, enjoy,
binge and interact whenever and wherever they may be. With that in mind, all I
can conclude is that we can be proud of ourselves for becoming parts of PlayStation's
#25YearsOfPlay.
