Dubbed "We Are One: A Global Film Festival", the event will feature curated content from some of the world's largest and most anticipated film festivals to be streamed on YouTube for free starting May 29th (Friday). Among the festivals united for this grand cause include Berlin, Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Toronto and Tribeca as well as Jerusalem, Mumbai, Saravejo, Sydney, Tokyo and London. With more details yet to be announced in the coming days, the online film festival will showcase films, documentaries, comedies, and conversations although it is unlikely that major films generally launching at film festivals will be included.
The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival have expressed that they are proud to join in the forthcoming YouTube event which universally aims to spotlight truly extraordinary films and talent and allow audiences to experience the nuances of storytelling from around the world and the artistic personalities of each festival considering that its cancellation for this year as well as the uncertainty around festivals in Venice and Toronto on September due to the COVID-19 pandemic has robbed filmmakers and movie studios of crucial platforms to showcase their works to the media and public.
Tribeca Film Festival co-organizer Jane Rosenthal added that the idea and purpose of the online filmfest is to unite and inspire people across borders during the recent health crisis. "All of the world needs healing right now," she said. Anyway, while the festival is set to be streamed for free, viewers are asked and encouraged to donate to the World Health Organization's COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
