Back in February which is a month prior to the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila and Luzon, Globe introduced its own 5G network to its most elite set of customers, Globe Platinum, followed by the telco's postpaid subscribers shortly thereafter. On August 24, 2020, Globe 5G became available to prepaid and TM subscribers in select key areas across Metro Manila including Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Makati Central Business District, Rockwell Center, Ortigas Central Business District and various strategic areas along EDSA and C5. Customers in these areas need to own a 5G-enabled mobile phone with their Globe prepaid or TM SIM on and they can enjoy their own mobile digital experience at lightning-fast speeds with no additional fees to be charged.
"As the Philippines is largely a Prepaid market, we are thrilled to be the first telecommunications company to expand the 5G service with them. With the vision of bringing the next generation of connectivity to all, Globe prepaid and TM customers have now been enabled to enjoy the 5G service. And, with the goal of making high speed internet accessible to as many Filipinos as possible, we will continue to broaden our 5G coverage and make 5G-enabled devices more accessible. We envision a world of impossibilities made possible by Globe 5G," said Globe Telecom Vice-President for Strategic Platforms and Partnerships Coco Domingo.
5G is the next generation of wireless internet connectivity where users can enjoy streaming movies and TV shows at the highest quality, play immersive online games and provide the clearest resolution for video chats. In 2019, Globe became the first telco in Southeast Asia to launch 5G when it introduced its AirFiber broadband service for Globe At Home subscribers. It was shortly followed by the unveiling of the first 5G service for mobile and the telco's introduction of the first 5G-capable device to hit the Philippine market.
