PLDT-Smart Communications and Globe Telecom, the premiere mobile telecommunications companies in the Philippines, have activated their respective 5G networks and steadily made them commercially available to a select number of their prepaid and postpaid subscribers. On the other hand, several international brands including Huawei and Vivo are starting to offer their own sleuth of 5G-capable flagship mobile devices to the local market. It will only be a matter of time before the commercial availability of 5G in the Philippines would expand and extend its reach across different parts of the country in the foreseeable future. But, what will the commercial launch and availability of 5G in the Philippines benefit and offer to the table in any foreseeable case? Well, for Smart, it will not only bring super-fast internet for mobile phone users but also introduce a new generation of digital services that could surely cater individual consumers and enterprise customers in different ways. This is pretty much understandable considering that you have seen a number of internet speed test results from several online influencers and tech enthusiasts, but there is more than just internet and digital services. According to PLDT-Smart Public Affairs Head Ramon R. Isberto on an interview with Cito Beltran on One News' Agenda, 5G is a platform that enables new technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet of things and other digital services that not only enhance existing services but also possibly make a new generation of wireless services when combined.
Prior to its commercial launch, Smart powered up the Gariath Concepts eSports studio in Quezon City to become the first 5G-powered professional gaming hub in the Philippines as well as the TV5 Media Center in Reliance, Mandaluyong City making it the country's first 5G-enabled Media City while Globe Telecom has successfully conducted its own tests on cloud gaming. Initially, 5G's fiber like speeds can enhance and strengthen entertainment services and eSports. Moving forward, the network can make possible new services that are sure to benefit the country's evolving progress, more particularly in the public transportation scene, including wireless sensors for the automation of factories, seaports and airports, traffic management and health services.
More and more affordable smartphones capable of 5G fiber-esque mobile internet speeds are starting to flock the Philippine market as people need to own a 5G-capable device to fully enjoy the network's benefits. For the time being which is as of this writing, Smart 5G is only available for postpaid subscribers while prepaid and TM users can enjoy the super-fast data service of Globe 5G in key select areas and business districts across Metro Manila. In the foreseeable future, more Filipinos will see and discover what Smart, Globe and other telcos entering our shores can offer that would enhance their digital lifestyle experience in today's modern world with the continuing evolution of technology headlined by the commercial availability of 5G in the Philippines and this is something we should look forward to upon the network's ongoing expansion.
