The Department of Education (DepEd) plans to launch the DepEd TV History Channel that will air films and documentaries on Philippine and world history to nurture historical awareness of Filipino learners, teachers, parents and students. The channel will be spearheaded by the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration (OUA) in coordination with the Office of ths Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction (OUCI) for the review and development of the materials.
In a news release, DepEd Secretary Leonor M. Briones said, “The Department recognizes the importance and the effectiveness of films and documentaries as learning resources. The creation of the DepEd TV History Channel will make these materials widely accessible to learners and teachers. We, in the Department, are glad to contribute to the vibrant history and identity of the Filipinos." Meanwhile, DepEd Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua noted, “The ideas and views that the learners may form after watching DepEd TV History Channel serve as their stimulus in improving their conditions and circumstances, in fighting for their rights, in upholding their nationalist aspirations, and in thriving in multi-culturalist societies around the globe."
The channel's initial lineup will feature existing historical video materials that have been previously shown to the public. DepEd may produce other content in partnership with local filmmakers. The historical films and documentaries will be available on-demand via DepEd Commons, DepEd TV's official YouTube channel and soon DepEd EdFlix, an online video on-demand platform comprising of historical videos and lessons. It will also feature lessons provided by history teachers and approved by the Curriculum and Instruction strand upon further review. Considering that the DepEd TV History Channel is slated to be an avenue for cultivating local talents, there will be filmmaking workshops and competitions that can produce historical films produced by aspiring and seasoned local filmmakers.
The contents to be shown on DepEd TV History Channel will be complied to the guidelines of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). Meanwhile, the viewing hours, time and schedule of the programs will be depending on the age and grade level of the viewers. In addition, the Department noted that the timeslot for the airing of DepEd TV would not interfere and, instead, will be asynchronous to that of DepEd TV History Channel considering that the former is strictly for curriculum-based episodes. However, a more flexible viewing schedule may be possible when the two channels become available.
