Due to the pandemic, families are now opting to live away from crowded city centers and are yearning for the freedom and safety of the outdoors. These efforts are part of AboitizLand's 5-year Pawikan Conservation Program in partnership with Aboitiz Foundation, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the University of the Philippines Diliman Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology. Within the program's first three years, AboitizLand has completed profiling of sea turtles in the area and their nesting sites and created beach zones to identify and evaluate safe areas. Another aspect of the program is providing jobs and volunteer opportunities in animal conservation for Batangueños from nearby towns as well as community vecinos (residents or neighbors in Spanish). With the engagement of local government units, the Pawikan Beach Patrol was established to help ensure the protection of endangered marine species through collaborative action by empowered stakeholders.
