National University (NU) crowned itself champion of the 3rd Asia Pacific University Games (APUG)-Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL) with a stunning 87-60 victory over the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Atlas and an easy 79-43 victory over host school Technological University of the Philippines prior as it completed the five-team competitions with a perfect 4-0 record at the Technological University of the Philippines gym.
The UPHSD Atlas finished third at 2-2, behind runner-up Mapua University Tech (3-1), in the five-day event supported by Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Philippine Airlines (PAL), LT Group of Companies, Healthy Options, BESTANK Manufacturing, OMNI Electrical and Lighting, KELME -EspaƱa Sportswear, Seascape Village, Fronte Motors, Paddock’s Casual Jeans, and Henn Athletic Club. The 3rd APUG, a tournament held under the supervision of the Asia Pacific University Sports Union (APUSU), has invited the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), the lone foreign team to participate. It eventually finished its APUG-PUBL campaign with a win-loss record of 0-4.
The APUSU and Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines (FESSAP), both led by their president Edwin C. Fabro, joined hands in organizing the 3rd APUG-PUBL, with the ladder being represented by its honorary lifetime president David Ong. The championship was hosted by Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), led by its president Engr. Reynaldo Ramos represented by Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ryan Reyes. The APUG-PUBL Organizing Committee was comprised of Robert Milton Calo, Melchor P. Divina, Frank Gusi, Allan Soria, Antonio Quiza, Cecille Sarmiento, Albert Andaya, Romulo Raytos, Dr. Gisele Bonsol, and Indonesian APUSU Director Ferri Jufry who was designated as the Championship’s Commissioner.
Ong, representing FESSAP, awarded the championship trophy to NU's team manager and its coaching staff led by coach Siot Tanquinsen, Glenn Capacio, and Seff Nada during the closing ceremony. NU will field a team to represent the Philippines and compete in the 6th Asian University 3×3 Basketball Championship in Putuo, Zhoushan, China to be held on June 11-13, 2024. The team will arrive on June 9 for the customary accreditation. The opening ceremony is set for June 11, which would also mark the start of the competition proper. The closing ceremony will be on June 13 before the teams depart for Manila the following day.
