Consistent with efforts to bolster its sustainability practices, the Jollibee Group notes a significant milestone in one of its brands in the strengthened implementation of its Corporate Supply Chain Sustainability Program that covers 11 company-owned commissaries and one logistics facility across the country. The holistic program targets to fulfill extensive energy and water efficiency and waste reduction goals and initiatives in alignment with the Jollibee Group’s Joy For Tomorrow sustainability agenda.

Taking the waste reduction effort further is Mang Inasal’s (MI) Marilao Commissary which achieved Zero Waste to Landfill Status in 2023. To achieve this, the MI Marilao Commissary efforts included repurposing and recycling scrap waste, converting organic waste into compost, and co-processing residual waste as alternative fuel for cement production. During the 2020 baseline year, MI Marilao Commissary has sustainably disposed of 53% of its total waste. With the leaders and the team’s dedication and teamwork, the site has gradually increased its sustainable disposal to 85% in 2021, 91% in 2022, and 97% at the start of 2023 before reaching 100% status by June of 2023. Waste Reduction is one of the focus areas of the Jollibee Group’s global sustainability agenda whose goals include reducing food loss and waste to landfill in the manufacturing process. These goals were set to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), particularly “Responsible Consumption and Production” (UNSDG #12).

Jollibee Group's Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer Jose MiƱana Jr. underscored the company’s proactive approach to integrating sustainable waste management practices into operations, stating, “We prioritize recovering, reusing, and recycling waste that contribute to the creation of a more sustainable food system, ensuring that we can continue to nourish and sustain our communities and our planet for future generations.” With its continued commitment to sustainable business practices, the Jollibee Group manufacturing sites across the country achieved a cumulative 42.8% reduction in waste-generated ratio last year compared to the company’s 2020 baseline. By the end of 2023, over 51% of its waste was disposed through sustainable means, a significant increase from 39.7% in 2021. Jollibee Group's Vice President and Head of Supply Chain Michael Ong emphasized, “The results achieved by Mang Inasal’s Marilao Commissary will be our benchmark for waste reduction implementation across all Jollibee Group manufacturing sites in the country, consistent with our commitment to maximize use of resources and reduce our impact on the environment.”

SM Supermalls Scales Up Sustainability With Largest Solar Panel System

SM Supermalls' Largest Solar Panel System

SM Supermalls has recently unveiled the company’s largest self-used rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system to date at SM City Santa Rosa in the City of Santa Rosa in the province of Laguna, installed across over 2 hectares of the mall’s building. With this recent milestone of scaling the company’s efforts towards energy efficiency, SM Prime reaffirms its commitment towards building for a sustainable future as it progresses towards its Net-Zero Ambition by 2040. The solar PV system at SM City Santa Rosa which has recently received the Certificate of Compliance (COC) from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is composed of 5,772 panels at 3.088MWp capacity and has an annual solar energy production of up to 4.292GWh. The installation of the solar PV system at SM City Santa Rosa will power 15% of the mall’s energy consumption needs.

SM Supermalls first started installing solar PV systems in 2014 at SM City North EDSA — the first mall in the Philippines to harness solar energy. In 2016, the solar power facility in SM Mall of Asia with twice the capacity of SM North EDSA was installed. Harnessing solar energy as a clean and renewable source of energy, SM Supermalls has reduced reliance on the power grid which is helpful during times when rising electricity demand is caused by increased temperatures. SM Supermalls is also part of the Department of Energy (DOE)'s Interruptible Load Program (ILP) that provides 110MV of power for communities across the Philippines. 56 malls use their own generator sets instead of relying on the power grid which has proven helpful when there are local power interruptions and power supply needs to be rationed. SM has the largest contribution among the private sector with SM Mall of Asia providing the highest committed capacity at 15.92MW for this program. All 85 malls of SM Supermalls are energy efficient. Every mall maximizes natural lighting, through skylights and windows, and all malls have used LED lighting since 2018, ensuring energy efficiency.

SM Supermalls President Steven Tan shared, “SM Supermalls is committed towards contributing to build a sustainable future. We have made significant strides in clean energy regeneration, as well as water conservation and recycling, and solid waste management. With the continuous support of our partners and the communities where we operate, we believe we can truly reach our science-based goals towards Net Zero by 2040.”
