The De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) SENTRUM, a cornerstone of the Lasallian community’s shared experiences, became a venue for history last November 27, 2024 with the unveiling of a dedicatory marker honoring Raul Patrick “Running Shield” Concepcion, an alumnus of DLSL High School Batch 1981. This poignant event celebrated the legacy of an extraordinary individual whose life exemplified resilience and an indomitable focus in the pursuit of his passion. Attendees included the DLSL administration led by President Bro. Edmundo “Dodo” Fernandez FSC, members of the De La Salle Lipa Brothers Community led by its Director Bro. Bobby Casingal FSC, Concepcion family matron Carmelita “Menchu” Concepcion along with Patrick’s siblings and relatives, representatives from Concepcion Industrial Corporation led by Chairman and President Raul Joseph “Jojo” Concepcion, DLSL Alumni Association President Gina Sabater, and other esteemed guests. Together, they honored a legacy that continues to inspire the Lasallian community and beyond.
A Life Of Purpose And Perseverance
In her heartfelt welcome message, DLSL Chancellor Dr. Merlin Teodosia Suarez encapsulated the essence of Raul Patrick Concepcion’s journey, quoting his inspiring reflections on finding fulfillment and running life’s race with passion and determination, “Sir Pat’s words remind us to live our lives purposefully and to embrace joy. Patrick’s story is a beacon of hope for students, parents, and Lasallian partners, reminding them to pursue their dreams and rise above challenges.” Menchu Concepcion, Patrick’s mother, shared heartfelt memories of her son’s extraordinary journey, highlighting the pivotal role De La Salle Lipa played in his development. Emphasizing the institution’s significant impact on Patrick’s life, Ms. Concepcion said, “We are reminded of a remarkable story that began right here in De La Salle Lipa. This institution holds a special place in my heart because it welcomed Patrick during the formative years of his life. It was here that he found the nurturing environment that helped shape him into the exceptional man that he would become.” She recalled how De La Salle Lipa sparked Patrick’s lifelong passion for running, sharing, “On May 30, 1980, he raised his running shoes and took his first step as a runner. From that day on, he was determined. And to quote, he said, ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.’” Over the next 42 years, Patrick ran an astonishing 127,811.89 kilometers — equivalent to circling the globe three times. His unwavering dedication to running, even while facing the challenges of pancreatic cancer, stood as a testament to his resilience and determination.
A Tribute To A Legacy
Bro. Fernandez FSC, in his Remarks of Circumstance, drew parallels between the transformation of the DLSL SENTRUM and Patrick’s inspiring journey. “The SENTRUM, much like Patrick’s life, is a testament to perseverance,” he remarked, referencing its evolution into a modern facility equipped with state-of-the-art air conditioning. This upgrade was made possible through the generous five million peso donation from the Concepcion family, further underscoring their commitment to enhancing the space for future generations. “Patrick’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all runners and Lasallians who use this space,” he said. For Bro. Dodo, Patrick’s identity as “Running Shield” redefined running as more than just a sport — it became a ‘shield’ and a safe space to overcome life’s challenges. Bro. Dodo reflected, “When I meet another runner, it feels like we can talk for hours. Patrick’s passion for running wasn’t just about the physical act — it was a way to stay strong and connected, uplifting others along the way.”
A Marker For Generations To Come
The dedicatory marker, unveiled during the event, pays tribute to Patrick’s running feat and his enduring Lasallian spirit. It commemorates his recognition as the “2022 Natatanging Lasalyano sa Larangan ng Sining at Palakasan”, a testament to his remarkable achievement and the inspiration he provided to countless others. Ms. Concepcion expressed her gratitude for this lasting tribute, saying, “Through this marker, Patrick’s story will continue to live on, inspiring generations to overcome challenges and pursue their passions with unwavering resolve.”
