For De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) Legal Management senior John Dexter Bulahan, representing the institution on a global platform and receiving the Best Delegate recognition is more than just a role — it’s a calling. As a passionate debater, student leader, and advocate, John Dexter has made his mark at the International Model United Nations (IMUN) Convention where he stands as a voice for change, not only for DLSL students but also for the youth of the Philippines. His journey through IMUN, which has taken him from Jakarta to Hanoi, reflects his commitment to using diplomacy and advocacy as tools for a more just and inclusive society.

The International Model United Nations (IMUN) is a prestigious academic simulation of the United Nations where young leaders from around the world step into the roles of delegates representing various countries. These participants dive deeply into pressing global issues, debating and negotiating solutions through the policies and perspectives of their assigned nations. To be chosen as a delegate at IMUN is a great privilege as it demonstrates a commitment to understanding and addressing complex international challenges — a key responsibility shared by global leaders. This opportunity is not only a testament to a student’s knowledge and diplomatic skills but also a recognition of their potential to shape meaningful social and policy-driven changes on a global scale. John Dexter’s journey into the IMUN was fueled by his experience in the DLSL Debate Society where he served as Executive President and his current role as Constitutional Committee Head for the Lasallian Jurists. He shared, “Model United Nations simulates the United Nations itself, creating a global network of debate and diplomacy. As a debater, I’ve had the privilege of joining these international sessions, connected by friends and supported by God’s grace. It’s an incredible opportunity to bring our voice and values as Lasallians to a global stage.”

The IMUN experience kicked off for the delegates with the 13th session held in Jakarta, Indonesia last July 2024. In that session, representing DLSL and the Philippines, John Dexter passionately lobbied for anti-gender discrimination policies in educational institutions inspired by his ongoing efforts with DLSL administrators on inclusive student policies. By October, he was part of the 14th IMUN session in Hanoi, Vietnam where he advocated for mental healthcare access in rural communities. He highlighted the critical need for primary healthcare treatment in low-lying areas, aiming for United Nations intervention to make mental health support available for those who need it most. He said, “In Jakarta, we were around 200 delegates; in Vietnam, the number narrowed to 100.” He recently continued to represent his alma mater and the Philippines at the 15th IMUN session in Tokyo, Japan. In the said round, the number has trimmed down to 50 delegates. As he reflects on what it means to represent DLSL and the Lasallian spirit at the IMUN, John Dexter’s message is clear. “As Lasallians, we are called to be voices for change. We recognize our privilege, and with that comes a shared responsibility to extend help and spark meaningful social change. My Lasallian education has instilled in me the importance of empathy and advocacy for the least, the lost, and the last.” His message to his peers is simple yet profound. He explains, “You can’t do it alone. My achievements are the result of partnerships — working with local government units, NGOs, and even rural health units in places like Laguna and Batangas to support my advocacy efforts. Being a debater isn’t just about extending your vocabulary; it’s about broadening your perspective and understanding that every issue has two sides. And perhaps most importantly, strive to be the person others are praying for. Be the change.”

John Dexter’s IMUN experience extends beyond debate sessions and resolutions; it’s a holistic journey that includes rigorous pre-conference preparation, research, and partnerships, all aimed at making each advocacy sustainable. The IMUN topics, he shared, are broad yet impactful. “For example, we were tasked with promoting mental healthcare treatment facilities. How we made this concept resonate and bring it to life was up to us.” John Dexter hopes to inspire more Lasallian debaters to join the Model United Nations, bringing their voices and vision to the world and is looking forward to see them alongside him in future journeys. John Dexter’s participation in IMUN highlights De La Salle Lipa’s commitment to nurturing and supporting globally aware citizens and preparing its students to engage on the world stage. It is a meaningful step forward in DLSL’s internationalization efforts, cultivating future leaders who are ready to impact and shape our interconnected world. IMUN provides a unique opportunity for Lasallians to put into practice the values of inclusivity and service that define their education, contributing to vital discussions on global issues like peace, human rights, and sustainable development. Through this experience, delegates sharpen invaluable skills in diplomacy and critical thinking while De La Salle Lipa continues to strengthen its standing as a forward-looking institution engaged in the global community.
