Batangas Province's Alay Lakad 2024 Raised Php3.5M For Scholarships And Other Projects

With the aim of providing inspiration and opportunities to the youth, especially the 'out-of-school-youth' (OSY), aspiring to continue their education, Batangas Province Alay Lakad Foundation Inc. (BPALFI) and the Batangas Provincial Government under Hon. Governor Hermilando I. Mandanas, in partnership with various government agencies, private offices and civic-society groups, conducted the 49th Alay Lakad last November 15, 2024 with the theme "Alay Lakad Para Sa Mga Kabataan Ng Bagong Pilipinas". More than 3,500 government employees and representatives of various sectors walked together from the Provincial Community Park in Kumintang Ibaba, Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Batangas in Barangay Gulod Labac, and Puregold in Barangay Calicanto, to the Regina R. Mandanas Memorial DREAM Zone, Capitol Compound, Batangas City, where the culminating program was held.
BPALFI raised a total of over Php3M (three million pesos) from all those who joined and generously participated in the annual philanthropy. The culminating program opened with a performance by the students of the Batangas Province High School for Culture and Arts followed by a message from Batangas Provincial Police Office Director P/Col. Jacinto Malinao, the standing Alay Lakad 2024 Walk Committee Chairperson, delivered on his behalf by P/Lt. Col. Angelito Gardian. Batangas State University and BPALFI President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo extended his congratulations and thanks and shared that the organization will share aid not only to the OSY scholars, but also to those affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. Governor Mandanas emphasized the importance of conducting the Alay Lakad for the youth who are in need and are striving to complete their studies for their future. He also added his gratitude to those accompanying and forming the program. Meanwhile, Solar Philippines CEO, Leandro Leviste, who was the featured guest for this year's Alay Lakad, handed over a donation worth Php2M (two million pesos) to BPALFI and stated that the Alay Lakad program is important because it supports education and livelihood, which are two of the main aspects in life that need to be given more importance.
Department of Education (DepEd) – Province of Batangas was hailed as the Biggest Delegation Awardee with the largest amount of donation reaching over Php400,000 while its muse, Trisha D. Bermejo of San Pascual, was crowned Mutya ng Alay Lakad 2024. Also gracing the said occasion were Vice Governor Mark Leviste, Atty. Angelica Chua-Mandanas, Provincial Council 5th District Senior Board Member (BM) Claudette Ambida-Alday, Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) President BM Fernando Rocafort, 2nd District BM Arlene Magboo, 3rd District BM Alfredo Corona, 4th District BM Jesus De Veyra, AnakKalusugan Representative Congressman Ray Reyes, former 2nd District Congressman Raneo Abu, Agoncillo Mayor Cinderella Reyes, Mataas na Kahoy Mayor Janet Ilagan and Vice Mayor Jay Ilagan who donated Php300,000, and officials of national and local government offices in the province.

Batangas PG-ENRO Launches Project ALA EEE In Lemery

Following its launch in Balayan, 10 beneficiaries from different coastal barangays in the town of Lemery were subsequently provided with a Micro-Refilling Station last November 21, 2024 as part of the continuation of the implementation of Project ALA EEE (Educate, Engage, Empower) Zero Waste Tiangge of the Provincial Government – Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO). It was done through a ceremony of awarding of donations and presentation of the project concept led by PG-ENRO Assistant Department Head Dr. Marivic Esmas in collaboration with the Lemery Municipal Government through its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office. Dr. Esmas explained the purpose of the ALA EEE Project, saying that due to the Philippines being the top ocean plastic contributor, it is appropriate to pay attention and be pro-active in reducing plastic waste pollution. He added that education, encouragement, and methods to effectively implement the project will help further promote zero waste management, especially garbage that reaches the shores and the ocean.
The micro-refilling station, which is a business model, will cater for the citizens in the community to buy small-portion refill system or retail. To reduce the consumption of plastic sachets which often end up quickly or wash away in the oceans, consumers will use reusable containers to make long-lasting copies of their purchased products.
Dr. Esmas also discussed the role of the beneficiaries for the sustainability and continuation of the project where there should be proper bookkeeping or recording of the purchases made by the beneficiaries, which will be monitored by PG-ENRO, to ensure that they are profitable and contribute to the reduction of micro-plastic pollution.
The micro-refilling station contains basic grocery items and some vending equipment serving as investment needed by the beneficiary to grow. "Kailangan lamang ng dedication, commitment, at pagiging responsable…Dapat kayo ay maging modelo sa inyong mga barangay para mas ma-engage pa ang iba sa adhikain nating ito (It only takes dedication, commitment, and being responsible...You should be a model in your barangays so that others can be more engaged in our cause)," said Dr. Esmas. Lemery's Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Gary Mendoza, in behalf of the beneficiaries, was very grateful to the Provincial Government of Batangas for bringing the project to the town to be a partner in the development and preservation of nature.
Meanwhile, among those who participated in the activity were several staff of PG-ENRO and Lemery MENRO as well as representatives from Lemery Pilot Elementary School and the offices of the Provincial Information Office and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
It can be recalled that the project was first launched in Balayan. The two towns were chosen because of their connection to Balayan Bay which is considered the province's fishing ground.
