The FIBA Regional Office-Asia has announced an exciting new competition format for the rebranded Basketball Champions League (BCL) Asia-East, showcasing top basketball clubs from the SEABA (Southeast Asian Basketball Association) and East Asia sub-zones under the FIBA Asia umbrella. The competition will feature eight powerhouse teams including national champions and runners-up from Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei. Over six windows, each club will host one round in their respective countries, offering fans an engaging basketball experience on home soil.
The Preliminary Round will divide the eight teams into two groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing to the Final Four. The semi-finals and finals will be held in a single city. The top two teams from this stage will qualify for the prestigious BCL Asia, bringing them closer to the international basketball spotlight. FIBA Asia Executive Director Hagop Khajirian expressed enthusiasm about the revamped format, emphasizing its potential to increase competitive intensity and offer promotional opportunities for clubs referring to the emphasis on International Club Competitions being one of the FIBA Strategic Pillars for 2023-27. “FIBA Regional Office – Asia has always been at the forefront of delivering the FIBA strategies in Asia. We are dedicated as well as duty-bound to deliver FIBA’s strategic pillars to the maximum extent. The East and Southeast Asia regions have long been celebrated for their passionate and knowledgeable basketball fans. We do believe that this refurbished format will not only enhance the competitive intensity among the clubs, but also present them with ample promotional opportunities,” he said.
