The Philippines' National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has successfully concluded its first Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) eSports Tournament with the Letran Knights claiming the championship after the hard-fought 3-1 victory over the JRU (Jose Rizal University) Heavy Bombers last July 27, 2025 during the 2025 Philippine GameDev Expo at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. This marks a historic milestone for Colegio de San Juan de Letran as the league's first-ever MLBB eSports champions.
“Sulit ‘yung pagod ng araw-araw na scrim, araw-araw na laro. Ngayon, sulit lahat ng oras at sakripisyo namin as a team. Unang una, thank you kay God, thank you sa mga teammates ko, at sa lahat ng nagtulong-tulong mag-organize ng NCAA eSports. Sana matuloy pa ito,” said Letran Knights jungler John Marcus Loyola. Both the Letran Knights and the JRU Heavy Bombers topped their respective groups at the Round Robin phase to earn a bye in the tournament. They met first in the upper bracket final, with JRU defeating Letran in a 3-1 victory to claim the first grand finals slot. The Knights fought in the lower bracket final against the Mapúa Cardinals in a 3-1 score to earn a rematch for the title. In the end, it was Letran who rose above the competition, sealing the championship with a 3-1 victory, over the team that dropped them in the bracket. With the victory, the team was awarded a trip to the 2025 Thailand Game Show this coming October courtesy of NCAA Esports’ partner and NCAA Season 100 eSports Kickoff organizing partner Collegiate Center For eSports.
Jade Michael Mercado, the captain of Letran Knights, was also awarded as the realme Finals MVP — with his strong performance in the gold lane and his presence and leadership. With the honor, he was also awarded his very own realme 14 5G. The JRU Heavy Bombers finished in 2nd Place in their Playoff run while the Mapúa Cardinals finished in 3rd Place completing the first-ever NCAA eSports podium finishers. “We’d like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible. Matagal na naming pangarap ito para sa mga bata na nangangarap magkaroon ng career sa eSports. Basta tuloy lang sila sa pagsikap sa pangarap nila, tuloy lang kami sa pagsuporta,” said Collegiate Center for eSports Founder Stanley Lao.

PP Invasion Wins Big At PGDX 2025 Indie Game Stars Awards

The spotlight shined bright on the indie game development scene at PGDX (Philippine GameDev Expo) 2025 as PP Invasion was officially crowned the People’s Choice Award winner under Indie Game Stars (IGS). Garnering the highest number of public votes during the 3-day showcase, the game earned a grand prize of ₱100,000. Indie Game Stars (IGS) is PGDX’s flagship platform dedicated to up-and-coming Filipino indie game developers — providing a stage to exhibit original games, connect with fans, and gain exposure to publishers, investors, and collaborators. It’s a celebration of raw creativity and innovation that lies at the heart of the local game dev community.
PP Invasion, developed by Alex E. Valdez, rose to the top after three days of exhibit engagement, community buzz, and active gameplay testing alongside a strong lineup of fellow indie titles. More than just a win, the award highlights the importance of public support in spotlighting homegrown talent and pushing the envelope for what’s possible in local game development. This year’s Indie Game Stars was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Sui Foundation, with program support from the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), and Smart Communications Inc. (SMART). Together, they helped raise the platform’s impact and reach — enabling even more developers to showcase their passion projects on the big stage. A heartfelt thanks goes to Sui Foundation whose sponsorship of this year’s IGS marks a powerful investment in grassroots game development. Their support underscores the global potential of Filipino games and the value of fostering regional talent across Southeast Asia. Their backing helped expand IGS into a more inclusive, impactful space for aspiring devs to shine.
PGDX 2025 organizers have also expressed their deepest gratitude to SMART who has stood with Indie Game Stars since its inception. For three consecutive years, SMART has supported the program and its mission — recognizing the creativity, dedication, and brilliance of Filipino developers. Their continued partnership has helped turn dream projects into playable realities, and they remain a vital part of the ecosystem that uplifts and empowers our devs. The journey of PP Invasion is a reminder: when creativity meets opportunity, great games — and great moments — can be made.
