Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR), the largest homegrown hotel operator in the Philippines, is cooking a rich collaboration with Chef Nouel Catis, the original creator of the viral Dubai chocolate. United by a shared vision on Filipinization and cultural sustainability, both are exploring the creation of an iconic food or beverage offering that not only delights taste buds but also champions Filipino heritage on the global stage.

The possible partnership was revealed during MHR’s Media Huddle at Twin Lakes Hotel in Tagaytay last August 13, 2025 where discussions hinted at a signature creation designed to resonate deeply with local pride while appealing to international markets. “This collaboration is deeply aligned with our strong advocacy for Filipinization which supports the Department of Tourism’s mission to celebrate local culture, cuisine, festivals, and crafts. At the heart of this advocacy is our Sampaguita brand of service, our heartfelt expression of Filipino hospitality that we proudly share with every guest,” said MHR Managing Director Cleofe Albiso. “We want something that lingers. We want something that would go viral for a long time. Beyond commercial success, I’ve always been about leaving a legacy. I wanted to re-enter the Philippine market not just to sell, but to pass on knowledge and skills to future chefs. When I learned about MHR’s Sampaguita service and this year’s theme of the Culinary Conference, ‘Celebrate Your Roots,’ I knew this was the right vessel for my return,” said Chef Nouel.

Chef Nouel was a featured speaker at MHR’s 4th Culinary Conference, held last August 11–14, 2025 at Twin Lakes Hotel, which brings together MHR’s executive chefs and F&B leaders to explore culinary trends and strengthen their craft. Albiso added, “We launched the Culinary Conference in 2022 right after the pandemic to reinspire our chefs. The ultimate goal is to do better each year as our culinary leaders grow in number and vision. This year, the theme ‘Celebrate Your Roots: Rooted In Tradition, Inspired By Innovation’ honors the Philippines’ diverse culinary heritage while looking ahead to new flavors, stories, and techniques.”

Forest Of Civilizations At Expo 2025 Osaka Dedicates 6,500 Year Old Tree To The Philippines

The Philippines is officially represented at the Forest of Civilizations, a landmark artistic installation and one of the largest exhibits at Expo 2025 Osaka. Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Chief Operating Officer and Philippine Organizing Committee Secretary General Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles led the symbolic tree naming ceremony last July 22, 2025, prominently placing the country in this global tribute to cultural heritage and sustainability. The Forest of Civilizations features 133 ancient oak trees, each over 6,500 years old, recovered from subfossil deposits and digitally scanned for preservation. Each tree represents one participating country and serves as a lasting symbol of humanity’s shared past and collective future. The installation is currently under consideration for recognition by the Guinness World Records.

During the brief but meaningful ceremony, COO Nograles was presented with the tree that will bear the name Philippines for the duration of the Expo. The tree is now marked by a metal QR code engraved with “This tree stands here in honour of the Philippines.” Visitors who scan the code will hear a specially curated message from the Philippine Pavilion in English, Japanese, and Filipino — powered by VoxTox AI technology. “We are honored to stand alongside other nations in the Forest of Civilizations. For us, this tree represents more than just our roots — it mirrors the spirit of the Philippine Pavilion, which invites visitors to pause, reflect, and reconnect. In a world shaped by rapid digitalization, both the Pavilion and this tree offer something deeply human: a space to feel, to remember, and to belong. This tree becomes a symbol of connection because, like every woven panel and story in our Pavilion, it carries the imprint of our people — their creativity, resilience, and hope for a future where humanity is more meaningfully intertwined,” said Nograles.

Joining a growing list of nations participating in the exhibit — including Belgium, the Czech Republic, Armenia, and the United States — the Philippines now takes part in this organic, global “root system” representing cooperation, heritage, and environmental consciousness. As one of Expo 2025’s most unique and forward-thinking installations, the Forest of Civilizations invites nations to not only take part in a shared global narrative but to continue that story long after the Expo closes in 2026. This marks another powerful addition to the Philippines’ presence at Expo 2025 Osaka, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainability, cultural diplomacy, and global dialogue.

PLDT And Smart Rally Youth As Climate Champions Through Xtrash Challenge

PLDT and Smart are inspiring the next generation to take the lead in protecting the planet. In partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the two organizations rolled out the Xtrash Challenge School Partnership Program — a youth-centered campaign supporting the call of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for environmental stewardship. The initiative brought together students from Nemesio I. Yabut and Maximo Estrella Senior High Schools in Makati City for interactive learning sessions on responsible waste management and disaster preparedness. Recycling bins were turned over to the schools during PLDT and Smart’s celebration of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Week, reinforcing lessons on sustainable habits and collective action for a climate-resilient future.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering communities, especially the youth, with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their environment and safety. By fostering good habits and character through programs like the Xtrash Challenge, we are investing in the next generation of climate champions who will lead the way in building a healthier and more sustainable Philippines,” said PLDT and Smart Head for Environment, Health and Safety Kristine G. Gonzalez–Catague. Michael Lorenzana, Principal at Maximo Estrella Senior High School, said, “Our partnership with PBSP’s X-Trash Program with Smart and PLDT is a manifestation of our commitment to proper waste management, love, and concern for the planet. Students, teachers and other members of the school community must seriously consider the significant role of everyone to make sure our environment and its resources will continue to be experienced by future generations of Filipino learners.” Fernan Placino, Assistant Principal II for Nemesio I. Yabut Senior High School, said in his opening speech to the student attendees, “The planet is getting warmer, storms are stronger and floods are worse. It only rains a bit and there’s an instant swimming pool. We shouldn’t just be academics but also be climate aware. When it comes to disaster preparedness, remember; it’s not just about doing ‘Duck, Cover, and Hold’ drills, its about knowing how to protect yourselves and your community because one day, you might be the one to lead others to safety.”

The Xtrash Challenge School Partnership Program underscores PLDT and Smart’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) No. 13: Climate Action. By fostering environmental awareness and responsible waste management among the youth, the Group contributes to national efforts in climate resilience and sustainability. This initiative reflects PLDT and Smart’s ongoing dedication to integrating environmental stewardship into its business practices, while empowering communities to take proactive roles in protecting the planet.

“This partnership is about more than just food or races. It’s about connecting with people, celebrating their effort, and sharing in their moments of triumph. We love seeing racers smile as they enjoy our food after a tough race. It’s in those moments, sharing a meal, celebrating a personal victory, or just having fun with friends and family, that we feel truly connected to them. SM City North Edsa, the first SM mall in the Philippines now celebrating its 40th anniversary, has opened the country’s third Book Nook, continuing SM Cares’ program to provide inclusive, community-centered learning spaces for Filipinos. Located near schools and universities, the Book Nook is free and open to the public, designed to encourage reading, storytelling, and cultural exchange. Its launch held last August 14, 2025 coincided with the observance of Buwan ng Wika and featured a Baybayin workshop led by veteran journalist and documentarist Howie Severino.

The seasoned broadcast journalist discussed the importance of preserving Filipino scripts and identity, noting, “Baybayin is not just our native script — it’s a window to our pre-colonial civilization. We were a literate people long before the Europeans arrived.” Book Nook pioneer Shereen Sy joined the event and spoke on the role of stories in connecting communities. She said, “The Book Nook at SM City North Edsa reflects our deep belief in the power of education and culture to build inclusive communities. We are proud to support initiatives that not only promote literacy but also celebrate Filipino heritage and identity, especially during Buwan ng Wika.” Severino and Sy also took part in the first learning session at the new space, which drew attendees for an exchange on reading, heritage, and culture.

The Book Nook at SM North Edsa follows earlier launches in other SM malls. SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, has positioned the program as part of its advocacy to promote literacy, education, and inclusive access to learning. SM Supermalls, one of Southeast Asia’s largest mall developers with 88 malls in the Philippines, is marking four decades this year with programs that highlight its role in sustainability, innovation, and community development.
