A family’s story of love, laughter, togetherness, and pain is poised to captivate audiences and tug hearts in the upcoming film “Meet, Greet & Bye” starring Piolo Pascual, Joshua Garcia, Belle Mariano, Juan Karlos, and Maricel Soriano. Showing in cinemas worldwide beginning November 12, the newest Star Cinema offering helmed by blockbuster director Cathy Garcia-Sampana is about the heartwarming journey of the Facundo family led by Mama Baby (Maricel) who succumbs to cancer anew but refuses to undergo chemotherapy after losing hope of getting better. Her four children, Tupe (Piolo), (Brad) Joshua, (Leo) Juan Karlos, and Geri (Belle) will then try to work together to find and push for alternative treatment for their mother before time runs out. Will the family survive their toughest battle yet?
Its trailer, which dropped last October 8, shows both lighthearted and deeply moving moments of the Facundo family set to win hearts with its poignant storytelling. “Talagang pinagmamalaki namin ang pelikulang ginawa namin para po sa inyo na handog ng Star Cinema at ABS-CBN. Sana panoorin nyo, hinding-hindi kayo magsisisi,” said Maricel during the film’s media conference. Belle hoped, “Sana yung mensahe umabot sa manonood natin. It will give so much importance to the people you love in your life.” Piolo and Juan Karlos, meanwhile, said that the film is painfully relatable. Piolo shared, “It was really hard to do because, I don’t wanna say personally, but it hits close to home, especially for Filipino families, and it’s something we have to face inevitably no matter who we lose as long as he’s part of the family.” Juan Karlos added, “Especially with what I personally went through in life, it’s also way too close.”
According to its writers Jumbo Albano and Patrick Valencia, the film was inspired by the universal fear of losing a parent. Jumbo explained, “What really pushed us to tell this story is that this is our love letter to our parents, the same way kung paano siya naging love letter din ni Direk [Cathy] sa kanyang mga anak.” Patrick added, “It’s a universal fear for everyone to lose yung mahal nila sa buhay so yun ang naging focus namin while writing this story na sana maraming tao ang maka-relate. Gusto naming ikwento ‘to kasi kwento natin itong lahat.” The movie also dropped its official poster and lit up ABS-CBN’s ELJ Communications Center building with the letters MGB based on the movie’s title. ABS-CBN has officially introduced the new P-Pop girl group DNA who just launched its debut single “Don’t Ask Me Why” under the StarPop record label. The three-member group consists of Tasha, Julia, and Ezri who share a musical bond as daughters of renowned composer and musical director Raul Mitra and singer Cacai Velasquez-Mitra. Their aunt, OPM icon Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, encouraged them to form a group as they were all passionate about music and arts.
In a video uploaded on the Star Magic YouTube channel, Julia shared, “Even from a young age we liked performing. We did theater workshops and we watched a lot of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ so we had fashion shows and they would take pictures of us.” Ezri added, “That was also around the time of Wonder Girls and their song ‘Nobody’ was really popular. That one we used to dance to in front of the TV. It was second generation K-pop that we were so inspired by.” But even with their sisterly bond, the DNA members also went through a tough time before they eventually got their rhythm. “The process to get to being comfortable doing it together was a very, very long one. There were a lot of tears, a lot of arguments,” said Tasha. Their song “Don’t Ask Me Why”, which serves as an anthem of self-expression encouraging listeners to stay true to themselves despite other’s opinions, was composed by Ezri and produced by ABS-CBN Music Head of Creative, Content, and Operations Jonathan Manalo.
Tasha, Julia, and Ezri signed a management contract with Star Magic last July and were first introduced as Mitra sisters. Before their debut, the trio showcased their powerful harmonies and fresh energy when they guest performed in Regine and Vice Ganda’s “SUPERDIVAS” concert as well as in Sunday noontime variety show “ASAP”.
