After retreating from the spotlight for more than two decades, Barbie’s Cradle returns with creative confidence and renewal in “Emergency”, their first single since 2003. Now available on digital music streaming platforms worldwide under Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, the harmony-laden indie pop track was penned by guitarist Kakoy Legaspi and produced by Barbie Almalbis together with the band. It finds the pop-rock quartet confronting existential anxiety through an unexpected lens: humor. Rather than offering compelling answers to life’s deepest questions, the song suggests that perhaps the healthiest response is to acknowledge its inherent absurdity and learn to live with it.
Legaspi explains, “It’s a sarcastic take on existential crisis. It’s about trying to make sense of life’s absurdity by simply becoming more ‘zen’ about it — and about ourselves.” “Emergency” mirrors the adventurous spirit that has long defined the band’s late ‘90s to early 2000s work, while also presenting the band at their most collaborative yet. The song begins with an unconventional verse riff written in 7/8 time, a rhythmic idea that became the foundation of the composition. Legaspi recalls, “I came up with the idea of the lyrics when I found myself staring at a piece of paper on the wall that had ‘emergency numbers’ written on it. At first, it was very hard for me to sing and present the song to the band, but Barbie came up with the ingenious idea of cutting up the verses in a very fast, jarring way, like a duet but with no spaces in between. It made the song flow way better and gave it a unique twist.” Although the track was originally written during the mid-2000s, it remained shelved for decades before being rediscovered during the pandemic. Working remotely through e-mail between 2021 and 2022, the band revisited and refined the arrangement before finally recording the song live in Almalbis’ home studio after restrictions eased. The sessions captured the chemistry of the band performing together with vocals and additional overdubs completed in subsequent recordings before acclaimed engineer Angee Rozul delivered the final mix.
“Emergency” also serves as the first glimpse into the musical comeback of Barbie’s Cradle. The band, composed of Barbie Almalbis (vocals and guitar), Kakoy Legaspi (guitar), Rommel dela Cruz (bass), and Wendell Garcia (drums), will release a few more songs throughout the following weeks leading to an EP release. As Barbie mentioned in the previous press release, “We’re excited to revisit the greatest hits and misses while also sharing new songs that reflect where we are now in our lives, both as musicians and human beings. This new body of work is more collaborative and intentional than ever. We’ve poured months of hard work into these songs, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve created.” Widely regarded as one of the most important Filipino alternative bands of their time, Barbie’s Cradle has built a lasting legacy through their acclaimed albums, such as Barbie’s Cradle, Music From The Buffet Table, and Playing In The Fields. The band’s return will culminate in a special one-night-only concert, happening on August 1, 2026 at the Music Museum. Tickets to the Barbie's Cradle reunion concert are now available exclusively at https://www.ticketmelon.com/gnn-entertainment-productions/barbiescradlereunion. HEY JUNE! surprises fans with a fresh take on a beloved Filipino classic with their rendition of “Ai Shite Ruyo”, originally recorded by legendary pop group Smokey Mountain. The release marks a milestone for the band and the local music scene as it becomes the first special collaboration between EMI Records Philippines and Island Records Philippines. By reimagining a song that has resonated across generations, HEY JUNE! brings a contemporary perspective to a timeless track while honoring its enduring legacy. The single further demonstrates the band’s commitment to celebrating Filipino music through their own distinct artistic lens.
Following their well-received cover of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, “Ai Shite Ruyo” becomes HEY JUNE!’s second officially released cover song. While remaining faithful to the emotional core of the original, the band infuses the track with their signature sound, introducing the song to both longtime fans and a new generation of listeners. The result is a version that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new, highlighting HEY JUNE!’s ability to reinterpret classics without losing their essence. Adding another layer of significance to the release is the participation of bassist Coey as one of the featured vocalists on the track. For the first time in HEY JUNE!’s recording history, Coey takes on a singing role in an official release, joining bandmates Jim and Aci in bringing new life to the song. The collaboration highlights the band’s evolving creative dynamic and showcases a different side of their musical chemistry. Fans who have followed the group’s journey will be treated to a new dimension of the band’s sound through Coey’s contribution to the recording. Originally released by Smokey Mountain as part of their critically acclaimed third album Death Penalty in 1994, “Ai Shite Ruyo” remains one of the standout songs from the group’s celebrated catalog. More than three decades later, its themes and melodies continue to resonate, making it a fitting choice for reinterpretation by one of today’s rising acts. Through their version, HEY JUNE! bridges generations of Filipino music while paying tribute to a landmark era in OPM history. The release serves as both a celebration of Smokey Mountain’s enduring influence and a reminder of how great songs continue to find new audiences across generations.
The single artwork pays homage to the iconic Death Penalty album cover with Jim, Coey, and Aci recreating the poses of the original Smokey Mountain members. Beyond the artwork, the band has also released an official visualizer that complements the track’s nostalgic yet contemporary spirit, giving listeners another way to experience the song. The artwork and visual elements may contain subtle details that pay tribute to the song’s history, offering a few clues and connections for those paying close attention.
