In recent memory, fake news items have been manipulating active social media users not only in the Philippines but also in different countries around the world. These untrue headlines would also prompt them to question the legitimacy of what they have read. To make it simple, fake news can destroy the credibility of those who in it and even people who are reading these items.
In the recently concluded Pinoy Media Congress last week, thousands of students from schools, colleges and universities in different parts of the country have learned the negative effects of fake news to the online world and the importance of fair and balanced journalism in today's modern world. On the other hand, we have learned the key elements of identifying a fake news site such as bad grammar, badly written content and lack of attribution among others.
Filipinos, more particularly the millennial generation, need to become more vigilant in not taking these fake news items seriously. Instead, it is always best for us to know which of the headlines posted in our social media news feed is fake or not. Otherwise, we should know the legitimacy of these sites instead of questioning them. Besides, in today's modern world, we have our own responsibility of finding proof of whatever we can find in the online world. In the end, we should all render these fake news sites and items obsolete even when they have advertisements.
