In observance of International Women's Month, Sony Interactive Entertainment Hong Kong recently shared a list of seven female characters that have not only redefined video games and the PlayStation brand, but also made their own mark in the world of video games. And to the surprise of Filipino gamers, the company has added Josie Rizal from Tekken 7 to the list which also surprised me a lot knowing that the latest installment of the fighting game franchise is set to release worldwide on June.

Although she received mixed criticism from Filipino gamers and was welcomed with controversy when she was introduced about two years ago, there are two reasons why Sony honored her for her own mark in the gaming world which makes it pretty much sense overall. First, her weapon-less Eskrima fighting style is a testament that Filipinos are world-class fighters. And second, she has one quality that every Filipino has in their own lives - her love for family.

She is the only Filipina character in the list and the one of the three Asian female video game characters recognized by one of the largest video game companies in the world, which include Chun-Li from the Street Fighter series and Chie Satonaka of the Persona 4 fame. Other characters who have made it to the list of women that redefined gaming are Lara Croft, Aloy of Horizon Zero Dawn, Ellie from Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, and Resident Evil's Jill Valentine. And there are reasons why they should be an inspiration to real women everywhere.

If you think Sony missed more women to be honored for redefining gaming, then don't worry. One news organization has managed to pick out some honorable mentions for those who are not contented with Sony's list, and you should read more about it here.
