On the last day of June where the iconic Metro Manila Pride March took
place, Universal Records Philippines successfully staged a concert that aims to
showcase world-class Filipino talent while exploring and discovering different new
worlds and genres that can be brought to life. And on that concert which was
graced by some of the big names in the Philippine music scene came the most
surprising announcement that has caught anyone's eye - the relaunching of the
record label's own film production and distribution arm Bell Films.
Many local movie buffs may not be familiar with Bell Films, but it was
one of the early independent film production outfits that has provided Filipino
audiences with its own brand of highly-engaging international quality films way
back in the 1960s. Heck, it has even produced its own films although many of us
didn't know if they were successful or not in the local box-office. These films
include the 1974 action movie Twin Fists For Justice starring Vilma Santos and
Hong Kong martial arts superstar/actor Meng Fei as well as two flicks featuring
the Universal Motion Dancers (UMD) namely "Sige....Ihataw Mo" in 1994
and its 1995 sequel "Ibigay Mo Ng Todong-Todo".
The June 30, 2018 concert held at the Samsung Hall, SM Aura Premier in
Taguig City and dubbed The Next Attraction has been considered a platform for
Bell Films to be relaunched marking its return into the realm of film
production and striving to make an impact in the digital age of quality and
relevant Filipino films. In fact, the event also served as a media presentation
for Bell Films' debut production for 2018 "Kontradiksyon".
Directed by multi-Palanca award-winning writer Njel De Mesa, the action
film Kontradiksyon is set to be an intense, groundbreaking, critical, in-depth
and edge-of-your-seat look at the Philippines' ongoing drug war which will have
audiences see the various aspects and opposing views on some of the biggest issues
happening in our local shores. Headlining the star-studded cast for this intriguing
movie that is slated to hit local cinemas soon are Jake Cuenca, Kris Bernal,
John Estrada, Paolo Paraiso and Elizabeth Oropesa.
For more updates on Kontradiksyon, follow Bell Films (@bellfilmsph) on
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. With that in mind, I guess all I can
say now is "Welcome back, Bell Films!!" if there's anybody living during
the Martial Law period remembers the company well.
