Developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game is set after the events of Mortal Kombat X when Shinnok was defeated in the hands of Cassie Cage. A corrupted Raiden plans to protect the Earthrealm by defeating his enemies, but the Keeper of Time Kronika is attempting to bring order to the universe by any means necessary including getting rid of the former for tampering with the events in the past. The sequel to Mortal Kombat X will feature old and new characters coming from the Mortal Kombat franchise including Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Baraka, Raiden, and even Skarlet from the 2011 reboot. Entering the Mortal Kombat universe through Mortal Kombat 11 is Geras who has the power that allows him to control the flow of time and produce sand-based attacks.
Aside from the new characters, Mortal Kombat 11 will introduce new gameplay features added to the usual Fatality and Brutality finishes which includes the Fatal Blows and Krushing Blows. Fatal Blows, similar to the X-ray moves of Mortal Kombat X, deal a large amount of damage to enemies but only become available if the player's health drops below 30% while Krushing Blows are special cinematic variations of certain special moves triggered upon meeting the right requirements during the game. Then there is the Gear system similar to Injustice 2, but largely cosmetic considering that the character's appearance are not being tied to its abilities.
