For
an independent mainstream film studio like Spring Films, going big is the only best
way to go. In celebration of its tenth year anniversary, the Filipino film production
firm behind the Kimmy Dora trilogy and the sleeper hit "Kita Kita" is
pushing itself to new heights and entering a whole new horizon with a
monumental partnership with FILM LINE Pictures Productions Ltd. for the
Filipino-Korean co-production of the upcoming film Sunshine Family.
Shot
entirely in Seoul and Yangpyeong County in South Korea, Sunshine Family is a
comedy-drama film about a partly-dysfunctional Filipino family living in Korea
for the past five years having its plans to return to the Philippines
challenged when it is involved in a hit-and-run incident. It has been long said
that in times of trouble, it is to your family that you can run back into. In a
country of strangers, can the Mapalad family learn to rely on each other and
overcome one final hurdle as a family before making it back to their own home?
Based
on the award-winning 1992 Japanese film "Hit-and-Run Family", Sunshine
Family is a proud merging of both Filipino and Korean cultures considering that
it is under the helm of Kim Tai Sik who is the acclaimed director of the 2007 international
film festival favorite Driving With My Wife's Lover. Apart from letting
Filipinos experience Korea via its breathtaking setting and scenery, the film brings
together the technical expertise of Korean cinema - from direction to
cinematography and editing - with the signature heart of Filipino storytelling
through its subject matter and talented cast.
Since
its inception in 2009, Spring Films has long been acclaimed for inspired
casting choices that go beyond the mainstream such as Eugene Domingo's first headlining
role in the Kimmy Dora trilogy, the surprisingly delightful love team of Empoy
and Alessandra de Rossi in "Kita Kita" and Carlo Aquino's epic
comeback in Meet Me In St. Gallen. And keeping true to this, Sunshine Family
will see renouned actors and long-time couple Nonie and Shamaine Buencamino
teaming up in a project for the first time as troubled partners-in-life turned
partners-in-crime Don and Sonya Mapalad.
Also
starring in Sunshine Family as the couple's eldest Shine is Sue Ramirez, one of
the Philippines' most promising stars who is known for authenticity beyond talent
and her ability to balance sweetness and strength. Sue was handpicked by no
less than the Korean Tourism Organization to headline the film considering that
she has been serving as an honorary tourism ambassador for South Korea since
2016. It is also worth noting that playing as Ramirez' leading man is Korean
pop idol Shinwoo of Blanc 7. Adding flavor to the film's main cast is Marco
Masa, a fan favorite in ABS-CBN's Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids, as the youngest
of the Mapalads Max.
They
say all clouds have silver linings, and there will always be a rainbow after
the rain. Will the sun truly shine again upon the Sunshine Family? The film is
set to hit Philippine cinemas on June 5, 2019. Follow Spring Films on Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram for more updates.
