In
the 2019 Southeast Asian Games women's volleyball tournament, thousands of
volleyball fans and spectators were able to witness the striving and valiant
efforts of the Philippine national women's volleyball team against the best in
the world hailing from across the region. Though their campaign in the biennial
meet ended winless, Philippine Superliga chairman Philip Ella Juico was satisfied
with the performance of these tough and tenacious volleybelles and insisted
that much more will be improved in the foreseeable future as the league continues
to support the national team program.
Now
that the Southeast Asian Games is in the banks and books of the year that was
in Philippine sports, some of the national team members are returning to their
respective mother teams and preparing themselves for a new season of the
Philippines' premiere semi-professional club volleyball league which is slated to
begin on the third week of February. These include national team Aby MaraƱo, Jovelyn
Gonzaga, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Rhea Dimaculangan and more. Speaking of Philippine
Superliga, I can already tell by its schedule that the 2020 season will be more
interesting and exciting than ever especially with the return of the Super Cup.
Last
year, prior to the SEA Games, volleyball fans were treated to an all-star
spectacle and showcase of volleyball prowess in the first PSL Super Cup with
the national team taking on two PSL all-star teams and guest team University of
Tsukuba from Japan which was the eventual champion of the round-robin affair. The
second Super Cup, however, will end the new season considering that it will
again feature some of the league's best and finest grouped into all-star teams
and an undisclosed guest squad to be announced in the coming months.
The
2019 season of the Philippine Superliga kicks off with the import-laden Super
Cup followed by the Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup scheduled to take flight on
May and then the league's first ever all-star weekend the next month. The
All-Filipino Conference will follow suit starting July and this will be an
exciting affair to jumpstart the new decade since there's nothing held in the
Philippines that can stand in its way. Of course, the league is ready to send some
of its most active players when the national team needs the most. With that in
mind, expect more thrilling and action-packed volleyball goodness on the 2019
season of the Philippine Superliga where the game is always different. Sa PSL,
iba ang laro dito!!
